Russians are coming! Russia approves tunnel to Alaska under Bering Strait

The Russian government has given the go-ahead on an ambitious new tunnel project that could connect Siberia with Alaska via an underground rail line. If completed, the $65 billion project will be the longest underwater tunnel in the world, besting the Chunnel between England and France by twice the distance.

YEAH, WOW!

Great idea, connecting two isolated, sparsely populated areas, not served by rail or decent highway systems and which serves no practical purpose whatsoever. Lets not even get into the fact that BOTH government's have to agree and work out the details together.

If you believe this is actually happening and not some idiots mistake on his crappy hippy blog who thought something he read in Pravda.ru is something to report on, then I have a tunnel i'd like to sell you.

Biggest winners? China, Canada, and Russia. Also, consumers, Chinese goods would be cheaper due to reduced transport costs.

(directfiesta is furiously researching for anything to prove i'm an idiot and Gene is finally starting to realize there are no highways or railways to these areas on either side to facilitate such transportation of goods and services - he might even realize its much cheaper to move cargo by ship directly from Nakhodka/Vladistok to Seattle, than to drive it the long way around, through absolute hell and in the worst possible conditions imaginable just to get it back to hubs like Anchorage and Seattle)

Frankly, you people scare me.

Like it or not the squealer has a couple of very valid points. However the adventurer in me applauds the idea of being able to drive across the strait and then across Europe. Very VERY cool concept....

for the record, I detest airplanes and air travel

Interesting... I can see it. I would imagine it would be worth it just for the natural gas alone - Isn't Russia a big producer of natural gas?

Who is going to go to Alaska to ride that thing?

Think of all the illegal Russian immigrants that will hide under the train to
ride in.

The bulk of their natural gas production is on the other side of the country and sold to ex CIS states and EU states.

I'm fairly certain that Russia also has substantially less natural gas than Alaska, not to mention they also lack the infrastructure to get it to Alaska and then to the pipelines (which lie across the entire state). Further, tree huggers will stop a pipeline from being built from the "tunnel" to tie into the alyeska pipeline as the majority of the state are either federal or state parks and wildlife preserves. Would be much more practical in that case and a similar political fight to just go ahead and drill in ANWR.

I thought everybody (especially Palin) wants to seal our borders, not open them up?

Oh, we just want to seal the borders that don't connect us to white people... Canada and Russia are still in...

Don't think so. As far as I know, almost all of those who wanted to immigrate to the USA have it done during poor 90x and even before, when all Jews were allowed to left the USSR (I mean those old losers who still live in Brooklyn). Now the USA doesn't look like a good place to move because some things are better than in Russia - others are worse (pros = cons). Telling you this as a Russian who was in the USA and saw a lot to compare.

Furthermore if someone would still like to become an illegal immigrant, why the hell he/she will be doing it in such a stupid manner (cross whole Russia, then go to Alaska, then cross Canada and only after that go to the USA?) Isn't it's easier to get a tourist visa ($100 for a year / $200 for two) and fly to the USA on the plane like a normal man?

So don't be afraid of illegal Russian immigrants. Be afraid of Chinese, African, Arab and "your own" Mexican ones.

I didn't live there at all. As I said above it's not that country where I wanted to live. Travel - YES, I travel a lot around the World. Live - NO. There are few places on the Earth where I may consider to move (of course absolutely legally by means of owning of real estate and/or investing) but the USA is for sure not among of them.

Vendzilla, the funny thing is that Russians and Americans are very similar (we are both too away from Japanese, Chinese, Arabian, African and other "exotic" cultures and in fact we have the same values). It's like looking into the mirror - the same face but from a different point of view (left and right are swapped) This is why Russia (the former USSR) and the USA were potential enemies. You know, opposite attracts, but the same - repels. We always were the mirrored poles. It's the main reason why I would never live in the USA - in fact, you guys are to similar to us and I don't like it. I mean if you want to move to some really different place, you won't look for a mirrored version of yours.

I don't believe mirrored, the former Soviet Union has been thru a lot more than the US in recent history. They have appriecation for what they have, where most of the younger US citizens and many of the non citizens feel they deserve what they have been given.

I would love to visit Moscow, on my bucket list. I'm excited I get to visit Prague in a few weeks.

Carbon is not the problem, it makes up 0.041% of our atmosphere , 95% of that is from Volcanos and decomposing plants and stuff. So people in the US are responsible for 13% of the carbon in the atmosphere which 95% is not from Humans, like cars and trucks and stuff and they want to spend trillions to fix it while Solar Panel plants are powered by coal plants
think about that
