:stoned Birthday bash

A firework inadvertently mixed in with birthday candles may have caused a small explosion that injured the birthday girl and her parents Tuesday night at their home in Finksburg.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on the 2000 block of Piedmont Hollow Drive, according to the State Fire Marshal's office. A small fire occurred from the explosion, but was quickly put out by the family.

The 43-year-old father was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center where he was treated for burns to his face and arm. The 36-year-old mother was treated and released at Carroll Hospital Center for minor burns to her arm, and a 13-year-old female celebrating her birthday sustained burns to her arm and eyes, and was taken to Johns Hopkins Pediatric Center. All three are in good condition.

There were seven people at the house at the time of the incident, said Allen Gosnell, Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal at the Westminster office.

"There was a birthday and there was cake," Gosnell said, "and afterward there was a low-level explosion in the dining room."

Authorities believe someone had inadvertently put some sort of low-order firework in with the birthday candles, Gosnell said, and the unsuspecting family lit the candles, causing the explosion.

"They didn't know what they had and they got surprised," he said.

Damage to the dining room was to the extent that Gosnell said he called the bomb squad in to investigate further.

Investigators from the fire marshal's office are hoping to interview the injured family members to get additional clues as to what exactly happened. Gosnell said evidence from the scene has also been taken to labs to determine what caused the incident.

"Right now, you're thinking this just doesn't add up and it doesn't add up," he said. "We still have a lot of work to do."

He maintained that fire officials believe it was a legitimate accident and there was no criminal involvement or foul play at work here. He also stressed the inherent dangers of fireworks.

"Folks just are not familiar with fireworks and the damage they can do," he said.

Reese, Gamber, Westminster and Reisterstown fire companies responded to the scene. The fire was out upon their arrival.
