Facebook posters get 4yrs jail time for UK riot post

Quote:
U.K. pair get four years each for Facebook riot posts

Two men in northwestern England were handed stiff jail terms for inciting disorder through social networking sites during the riots that erupted Aug. 6 in north London and flared for four nights across the capital and other English cities.

Cheshire Police said Jordan Blackshaw, 20, and Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan, 22, both received 4-year sentences for using Facebook to "organize and orchestrate" disorder.

Blackshaw used the social networking site to create an event ? with a date, time and location ? for "massive Northwich lootin.'"

Impressive that they were sentenced so quickly. Around here a case like that would take at least a year to complete.

This is fucking ridiculous. Firstly they should go to jail for using Facebook (flame away) secondly, has anyone even seen the kinds of groups there are on Facebook, people around me are constantly being invited to the weirdest fucking groups like; tickle a turtles ass or burn the governments nipples and its not assumed the creators of these groups are inciting violence or improper acts. Police and government just decided that the riots need a face and this kind of shit will throw the general public off the real issues behind what happened.

Yea, I was reading about some of the sentences for arrested looters while the riot was still going on. Swift legal response like that is a much better deterrent than our years long process.

Yeah, you can count on two years for any kind of "big" case.

If someone is convicted to 3 months in jail it can make a lot of sense for them
to not file an appeal because 2 years later they may end up having to go
to jail anyway. So instead of wasting 3 months of their life they end up wasting
2 years and 3 months.

Not really a "slippery slope".

The punishment is disproportionate to the actual crime. This extreme sentencing is politically motivated. I don't condone what they did or the rioting in general. But fuck sakes... we got people getting locked up for stealing a bottle of water. We had politicians wilfully abusing millions of pounds in expenses and they got of with an apology. Our bankers bamboozled the global economy and got rich of it... they got bonuses! How the hell can we justify dishing out these sort of sentences.

It's amazing how the right wing media has stirred up the populace over here. People are baying for blood over this and normally rational people would like to see us hang 11 year old kids for stealing chewing gum! ( Or see them raped in prison it seems )

People seem to be quite happy to give away their own rights as long as these so called 'feral youth' are prevented from stealing and looting from our corporations. The same corporations who ship as many of their jobs to sweat shops in china and india while we can't get a job over here. Oh I forgot... that's the immigrants fault!

We'll wake up one day and realise we are living in a police state and we will only have ourselves to blame.

Aren't they responsible for an act that caused a lot of damage and deaths? If my business was demolished or a loved one killed I would demand a lot more that 4 years from the ass-wipes that engineered it.

No these two were not responsible for anything other than being stoopid. They called for a riot (on a facebook page !) in a northern town 200 miles from London.

THE PROPOSED RIOT DID NOT HAPPEN !

NO ONE TURNED UP !

The problem here is proportionality. What sentences must now be dished to people who involved themselves in real rioting.

Worse is that violent criminals and sex offenders do not get such long sentences.

It looks to me like there is a lot of people in this thread who are falling for the UK govt's bullshit. Talk tough, demonise "gangs", dish out a few big prison sentences, and no one will ask what is really going on here.

They were convicted of ... "organize and orchestrate" disorder." ... Starting a riot. Prisons are full of people convicted of conspiracy. Conspiring to commit a crime can get you as much if not more than if you had actually committed the crime. They were not innocent.

Sentences for looting are always higher than for shoplifting. There's a big difference between the two.

As far as what is really going on please tell me, I'm a little slow.

Whats really going on is that initially spontaneous violence erupted in some very deprived inner city areas. Explaining and actually dealing the social cause of that is a lot more difficult than locking up a couple of idiots who had absolutely nothing to do with the actual violence.

Whats really going on is that after the initial spontaneous riots had erupted lots of different people with different agendas took advantage of the situation for personal gain. Some of these people belonged to organised "gangs", others were random criminals, others were carried along with the crowd. Some of it was organised, these organisers will never be caught.

Whats really going on is the UK govt ( and the Metropolitan Police) is up to its neck in the whole Murdoch phone hacking scandal.

These riots have taken the real news off the front pages. Cameron now gets to talk tough and send send a few idiots to jail.

Yeah, and that's exactly why they are going to jail.

A disturbance happened then instigators tried to make it bigger.

No one will probably ever live in a society where there is never a disturbance;
but to have people waiting in the wings and plotting to make the disturbance
bigger is something that governments are going to act on.

I lived right in the middle of the LA riots.
I didn't go out to try and stop anyone from rioting; but I also didn't go out
and join in and make the riot bigger.

Bulllshit.

We have an expectation of privacy in our home and can make a case of
invasion of privacy. There is no expectation of privacy on the internet.

People just felt that way for a long time because search engines didn't index
a trillion pages back then.

I'm not just talking what you do at home.. I'm talking about tracking peoples movements with number plate recognition, facial recognition, credit cards, phone tracking, phone hacking, social network monitoring.. it's already happening.

6 months for stealing bottle of water... costing the public £30,000 in court costs, and another 30,000 in prison costs..

Youth Clubs and funding in Tottenham cut by 65%

Unemployment now standing at 2,500,000 plus, UK prisons now all full.

Government and tabloid press clueless as to have to change situation except for punishment of poor.

People working in adult who can't see the dangers of two people getting four years for posting on facebook, for people working in adult, need their head examining.

How many years for "conspiring to corrupt morals"?

If you help to promote a riot that causes millions of dollars (or pounds) in damage, then you get jail time. Easy.

Stop being simple ...

No one just stole water. Looters were apprehended.

No one just posted on facebook. Someone was organizing/promoting others to riot.

Don't use legitimate problems to defend dumb asses who most likely are not even
affected by those problems.

It only makes people ignore the real problems because you are associating them with
just plain stupid acts like calling for a riot on Facebook.

It's totally illegal to do what they did.
They could have made the exact same post and substituted "protest" in place
of words like "looting" and there would not be a charge.
A protest is not a riot.(until the cops show up at least )

I don't disagree, they got what they deserved but what they did was hardly news worthy or something to be made an example of. Politics controls the masses once again.

4 years for a posting on facebook for calling for a riot that did not happen ! ( maybe the police should go through all the postings here and see all the stupid things people have written, drunk, without thinking, ....)

6 months jail time for stealing a bottle of water.

Of course they broke the law and should face the consequences. But the total lack of proportionality shows how the punishment is the only solution the government has to the criminalization of a whole section of our society.

Creating mass unemployment, a million young people without jobs, police harassment, and petty crime. This is a problem that is being built not solved.

The thousands now charged and given criminal records will now be permanently on benefits and into more crime.

By MIPS who were fiddling expenses worth more than all the goods stolen.

By Police who took money of tabloid newspapers and sold rape victims info.

BY newspapers who were caught hacking murdered children's' phones.

By bankers who created fake financial products and stole billions.

For the above the punishment is less than the stealing of a bottle of water.

Meanwhile the gov has the right to rubber bullet and water cannon us, and to police the INTERNET.

Correct.

Someone was organising and promoting others to riot. But not these 2 idiots.

the two men, Jordan Blackshaw, 20 and Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan, 22, were imprisoned for an offence that some do not even realise is a crime. And while the communities secretary, Eric Pickles, complains that people would be alarmed if incitement to riot had led to "just a slap on the wrist", a four-year sentence goes far beyond that consideration.

If the two Cheshire men had left home and actually taken part in a riot, it is likely they would have been charged with violent disorder. The average sentence passed on the 372 people convicted of violent disorder in 2010 was just over 18 months. The 1,434 people convicted of public order offences last year got, on average, two months inside.

Normally, to qualify for a four-year sentence, a convict would have to kidnap somebody (average sentence 47 months in 2010), kill someone while drink driving (45 months), or carry out a sexual assault (48 months).
