Spotify

How long do you think spotify will last? I mean from an artist point of view?

If all the music is free, are the artists really making enough money to continue to participate?

Or, does the fact that so many people use spotify lock in the artists such that if they don't participate, they get zero exposure?

I've been listening to all kinds of good music, a few ads here and there, and have no motivation to buy the music. That can't be good for the artists.

How much of it would you have bought ?

You have paid them something in Ad revenue.

I can't say how much I would have bought. If it wa 10 years ago, I probably would have bought the album.

The ad revenue that I helped support, I can't imagine matches outright purchasing of the album. Or does it (spread across all users)?

Well, I have been a member since it launched in the UK. It is only new here. I love it...single best Internet thing I have joined in years. However, I am a serious music nut and I know ghat my less music obsessed friends aren't as in love as I am. For me the offline playlists on your phone is worth it alone. Heck, I am listening to one now.

Also, the collaborative playlist feature rocks. I have several lists going with friends.

Heck, if enough industry people are on it, why not friend each other there and do a GFY mix ?

Oh and the artists get paid by unique listens. Several of my friends have material on Spotify and it has been interesting watching them watch their royalties from it.

I hope it last a long time! Just recently got the premium so I can have it on my phone as well. $9/month to have your music library everywhere you go, and so far it hasn't let me down on what songs are available.

For the people I know, it is worth it. However, they aren't multi-platinum artists. What they do appear to think is that otherwise people would be downloading and listening without them getting paid at all.

Through Spotify, more people are finding out who they are in the first place. Then, they get money from them having listened to the track.

Exactly..I use it all the time. It is like crack for somebody really into music.

Myself and my friend Tofu (some of you know him) say it feels like when the kids enter the candy forest room in Willy Wonka.

I am not even really sure how you add people to your Spotify. It appears most people I am connected to come from FB. I am Sarah Jayne Anderson on both..anybody that wants to add me on either can.

Artists are starting to make money on it. The Free version is limited. Not sure how it works in the US at the moment, but here in Norway it started out as free and awesome to make people hooked on it.
Now after a couple of years they changed it so the free version has a limited amount of plays for each song, and 10 free hours per month or something. You also need to pay to be able to use it on your phone. I went from a free account to a paid account when they limited the free version, and I know a lot of others did as well. I think it's a business model that will work.
A quality product that is easier and more convenient to use than pirating music. They got the right idea, and will be able to succeed because of it.
I stopped downloading pirated music when I started using Spotify just because of how easy it is.

That is how it was in the UK too.

In the States, it has gone straight in as a limited service. For like ten bucks a month of unlimited music, that is cheaper than even one physical album a month. Now, I still buy outside music. In fact, I have bought two albums this month already from groups I never even heard of before I found them on Spotify.

One of my new fave songs is an album track from a Swedish singer that I never heard of until this month. I can't even find the song on Youtube. So, I bought the album online.

I have found weird patches of artists I can't find but I have to work pretty hard to do it and I am sure that is a licensing thing that they are working on. Heck, I thought I couldn't find The Prodigy and then it turned out they were under a different name. So, sometimes it is just having to figure out the filing system.

I like my Spotify premium Goes well in my iphone and also you can make as many tunes as you like go "offline mode" (basically a download) so I can always listen even if I have 0 reception on my phone etc. Also nice to hook-up with all my FB friends and their playlists through the Spotify friends list.

It could possibly work for ad revenue sharing. Only time will tell. But I use it all day long and love it.

I heard Dave Navarro interview the other day and he said that he was lucky that Janes Addiction started before the internet age because there was big money in album sales that just isn't happening nowadays. The music business has changed a lot and it is much more watered down and much less money being made, but it is easier for bands to get heard that would have never had a chance at all before, although it doesn't really transfer into money.
