    How to tell if my new USB3 port is working correctly?

    My system is older with only USB2 and I just installed a USB3 PCI card with two ports in it. Both ports work and I'm plugged in to a USB3 external drive, but how do I know it's working as a USB3 port and not USB2 at a slower speed? From what I understand it is backwards compatible.

    I'm transferring files to it right now (large ones) and I don't see a noticeable transfer speed difference, thus this post.

      Do you have a USB3 cable?

      Also, if you're transferring to (or from) your regular 7200RPM or 5400RPM hard drive in your pc, that is your bottle neck.

      Unless you're using an SSD, or a 10kRPM HDD, you probably won't notice much of a difference.

              Ahhhh, that makes sense. That is indeed the bottleneck. Been looking for an excuse to upgrade my HDs anyway.

              How much did you pay for the VelociRaptor?

                  Last time I bought one, from newegg, it was like $130 for 150GB.

                  I use this only for the operating system, Adobe apps, occasional PC games i play everything else goes on a 2TB drive.

                  I've had good luck with them, but some people haven't.

                  Would recommend a backup service like Mozy or Carbonite just in case.
