Would war hurt us ?

Hello people . Would war with Iraq hurt us ? Do you guys think we would get less traffic and sales because of it ? How would the industry and economy hold up if we go to war ?

I'm not sure about this business in particular but overall war is very good for the economy.

War is only good for the economy in the long run, at least 4-6 months after a successful effort. In the short term, expect a dropoff. Fear and uncertainty curb spending and hurt the stock market. Unless everyone is scared to go out so they sit inside and jerk off all day instead.

A big war is maybe but I think that the whole "war economy" thing is blown way out of proportion. After WW2 great sums of money and huge numbers of workers were needed worldwide to rebuild. After the Gulf War, there was no such need. There may be some short term benefit to defense contractors and such but I think the overall effect will be almost zero.

The first few days will suck I bet. Every guy in the world, 18-70 will be glued to CNN.

Agreed... our economy is on pins and needles right now waiting for this to happen.. Any bad or uncertain news could send us into a tailspin that could take awhile to recover from... dispite the outcome or progress of the war.

its very possible that resource prices spike to a point where it brings on a recession. it would take at least 2 years to recover from an actual recession.

that wasn't much of a war. if the iraq war went that smoothly it shouldn't put us into a recession.

if it goes smoothly, wouldn't it have the same non effect as the afghan war then?

I'm just trying to see if this "war helps the economy" is true or not

If it is true, what kind of war?

resource prices is the key if the war goes smoothly. iraq will fight back. i don't see saddam giving up easily, even if they are gonna get their ass handed to them.

they're going to other countries to step up oil production to try and keep prices down.

All this talk of war has lowered the US currency to lows it hasn't seen in years in comparison to the Canadian $$$. It is already hurting my bottom line.

The idea that war helps the US economy is based on what happened during World War II: we put women to work.

Duh.

I guess this time we'll have to put the children to work.

We are already seeing prewar jitters just look at consumer confidence and the stock market. If or should I say when a war starts expect things to drop off for a while. People will be glued to CNN not porn. If the war lasts for a long time things will recover. BUT probably the biggest issues will be if there are acts of terrorism in the EU or the US. If that happens expect the worst for quite some time.

This war will not help the economy unless you consider the fact lots of young men will be cannon fodder and not competing for jobs.

Exactly. And before WW II the US didnt have much of a military fleet. A lot of people that were unemployed and didnt go to war got jobs with ship builders and other military related industries.
