Got stunk with CA sales tax on ebay

Made a purchase on ebay, then found out the seller is in California, and got stung with additional sales tax.

I must be more careful to buy outside CA...no more "the price you see is the price you pay"

I wonder if we can put this into the same category as prechecked cross sales. "Hey I bought this but got charged for that"

[edit] Title was supposed to be got stung, not got stunk.

Wonder if the seller will actually pay the state or if it was just more profit.

.

I would assume it's collected by eBay.

I believe it is up to the seller to pay the sales tax to the state. You have the option of adding sales tax for sales in your state only if you have a real store or are required to charge it, etc. Can't see ebay doing this extra step, so chances are its just extra profit for the seller unless they are honest and report it as a store sale and thus pay the tax, makes a guy wonder though. I have bought a few things in WA this way and paid the extra for sales tax.

According to the BOE, if you bring it to / use it in CA, YOU need to pay the use tax

Many (most) folks don't bother to add this to their tax forms, so the state is stepping in...

think about that

I believe you are supposed to report that and pay it to the state, just like you are a brick and mortar store
