The People?s Republic of China has gone on a buying spree on the resource-rich but economically underdeveloped African continent. And central to the plan has been massive investments into raw materials as well as political influence in a number of key African states, notably Sudan, Angola, and Zimbabwe. The reasons are starkly mercantile but equally politically motivated.

Yes Africa has massive potential in so many areas, the Chinese can see it but few others seem to get it. For example, if you weren't living on benefits you could invest in now main market listed Lonhro who have just won a contract to supply hake to Walmart in the USA from South Africa.

Yes, that's generally the stereotypical response. The question has always been "when" Africa comes right not "if". The Arab spring in north Africa, the demise of Mugabe in Southern Africa (the world cup in SA), a lot of disposable income building up in West Africa notably Ghana and Nigeria. Africa is where you need to get now to get ahead of the game.

Not surprising. Do you know how expensive solar was before the Chinese got in the game? I just hope they make it so affordable that it becomes a REAL option for 3rd World countries. Those are the places that need solar the most.

Not only gold and copper... Africa in certain regions, if you have the money, is PERFECT for grain.

China owns an area of around the size of BELGIUM in Africa which is simply used for crops harvested 100% for China.

I don't think it's stereotypical at all. Africa has been a cesspool for decades. I remember Live Aid in the 1980s, and nothing has changed since then. This past week there has been a number of articles about starving children in Africa, and just this morning there was another article about fighting in Mogadishu.
