Just found a 25+ year old Gold Necklace.

I just happen to look in an jewelry box that I thought was empty and have not
    opened for two decades.

I wondered what happened to that chain, I used to like it.
Now I see that it was broken right at the clasp.

I paid about $120 for it back then.

Should I pay someone to fix it or just sell it for the gold?

    It's 18'' 24K gold "s" chain (flat snake chain).
    I wonder what it's worth?

Just did a quick google :

    DA FUCK!!!!!!!!

    Then :

    http://www.usagold.com/reference/prices/1985.html

    Now :

    http://www.usagold.com/reference/prices/2011.html

Jesus, no wonder nobody wears this shit anymore.

    Fuck!!!!!!

This was cheap junk that everybody wore back then.

I think I'm selling this shit.

Just found out it was "gold plated".

    Not worth shit!!!!!!!!!!

What really sucks is that I put on a clean shirt and dress shoes to go out and get it
    checked.

Talk about adding insult to injury to a webmaster.

My logic on gold is that its more valuable as a memorial than as a metal...

When my mother eventually dies, and that means the end of our family bloodline so to speak (Besides my son) all her gold and my wedding rings and other assorted family gold, will be melted together to form a ring... One ring connected to and made out of ALL the other rings, from generations past... Father Mother Me, Aunts Uncles etc... Will become just ONE RING...

It will be One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them...

Then, when I die, it will get passed to my son, who no doubt will sell it and buy drugs...

              Yep.

Bought it from a highly reputable department store too.

I also thought it was 24 carat gold.

That's not really true because after being told the necklace was fake,
I felt just a dead as she is.

                              I went to a "pawn/buy gold" shop.

The guy took it and looked with a magnifying glass and said "14 carat".
Then he scratched it on some kind of metal plate then poured some acid
on the plate and wiped the scratch off. He then said that it was silver that
                              was gold plated.

He's got to be right because if he's trying to make money then he's not going
to let me walk out with real gold. He's going to offer me a low price so he can
                              profit.

                              It's fake....NO DOUBT!

I pulled it out and looking at it again and I feel you!

This thing looks really good to be fake. Not even a speck of tarnish!

I lifted weights/jogged/showered/etc with it on for several years without ever
taking it off until it popped while lifting weights.

If it's fake then I still got my money's worth out of it.
I'm going to see if I can get it fixed and start wearing it again.

What are the markings on it ? Can you read it ? It may say 925 on the clasp somewhere
I need a magnifier to see it. I took the guy's word for it.

He did say the clasp was 14 carat, but he scratched the rest of the chain and
                                          said "no deal".

The ring you make from all that other jewelry may be too large to wear comfortably, that being said, i am sure you could come up with another creative solution!

Here is the exact test the shop used :

Note : If a 14k piece is tested with 18k fluid then it fails the gold test.

                                                            Hmmmmmmm?

This is a cool test, but it works for some gold plated and silver too. So not solid.

This is a cool test, but it works for some gold plated and silver too. So not solid.

If they use 18k acid on 14k metal on a touchstone, it will burn it off. If they put the 18k acid on 14 metal straight it will make it turn brown, or its burning it, Testing gold by acid is a process of deduction, but you also have to know what you are doing
