They were a cool band. If you haven't seen it watch a movie called Dig! it is about the Brian Jonestown Massacre and their rivalry with the Dandy Warhols. It is a very cool movie. They have the footage of the night that BJM fell apart as members of the band literally started fist fighting with each other (actually this happened on several occasions, but the movie shows the most famous one). It also shows how close Anton Newcombe came to being a big star, but it seemed like he kept sabotaging himself. Back in about 1997 I actually pitched a book to a small publisher that would be about BJM, Newcombe and their rise and fall. The publisher loved the idea, but Newcombe wouldn't allow me access and wanted nothing to do with it. I considered doing it anyway, but quickly realized that without access to the footage and to the band and his family and friends it would be very tough to make it worthwhile so it got scraped.
They are actually still around today touring.
As for my choice for most underrated band of the 90's I would choose Grant Lee Buffalo. Check out the record Might Joe Moon. It is still one of my all time favorites.Last edited by kane; 07-21-2011, 03:01 AM.Comment

Anton is quite talented and yes, you're right, his greatest enemy was himself. They could have really gone really big but I guess maybe deep down the small gigs and tour circuit is the route he wanted to take. Awesome creative range and diversity of styles.Comment

Can't vouch for the "most underrated" yet I always greatly enjoyed The Gits and thought they just had it
too bad they couldn't live up to their cult band status due to the tragical circumnstances.
Found out they exist in the "Hype" documentary

a must see for anybody who lived through the Northwest rock explosion.Need hosting, cloud, CDN or solutions for your AI? Go faster while saving with The Last Host you'll ever need!| Double Impact PR | Telegram carl_boro | Read My Educational Series | Read my Adult Biz Chronicles|Comment

The guy was amazing. he would get studio space for like three days and in that time he would play every instrument and record three albums worth of music. I think sometimes there are artists who can't function on the big scale that big stars do and he seems to be one of them.Comment

Fugazi rocks... but this thread is 90's...
hands down most under appreciated band... Rx Bandits...
They we're amazing. Live. Recorded... They had what it took, but got wrapped up in some bad label politics... and got a bad wrap. They worked for it. Got close, and had it ripped away.
A close second would be The Ataris...
With Homegrown rounding out 3rd...
Behind that... Reel Big Fish
On that last note...
All of the above shared stages with No Doubt, Sublime, and many others that they helped cross into rockstar status... fuck hollywood and the backend deals...
and last but never... ever least... RIP Nick
and Lynn...
