About 2 weeks ago, I had my perculas spawn and was up half the night trying to catch the lil buggers.
I got them in a small 20G and they are doing well.
I was about to catch about 50 of them.
Eight now..they are about the size of a pencil head.

I'll post pics later of them
WOW... those are some kick ass tanks. Very Nice.. I hope the clowns do ok. What are you feeding them. We'd definately be intersted in having you on marinepets.com you should post your tank pics in the "tank pics" section I know everyone would love to see them.

Yah..it doesn't take much to get money wraped up in tanks.
On my 38G and my 75G. I use a B-Oinic Doser. The kind with the air pump that puts in the 2 part Buffer system.
The 250 has a CA Reactor that I built myself on my free time.
It cost about a 1/3rd of the cost to build than to buy a fully made system.

Most of my corals, i started out with just frags from like Coral Dynamics..cheap, like $12 a frag. Then time will take over.
pretty much thru all my tanks, they all started with frags and as they grew. I fragged them out.

My Clowns..once when they mature. I'll prolly sell them to my LFS and make a few bucks. This is my first time trying to rear them after a spawn. So, its kinda like trial and error.
My Clowns been spawning about every 45 days or so.

Ya wanna raise clowns, get Joyce Wilkerson book...truely awesome.

I had 4 tanks up until this summer.

150g, 90g, 70g, 40g

We went away on vacation and our home was struck by lightining burning everything up on the one circuit (1 fish tank - 150g).

It also tripped something with the A/C unit and since there was no a/c caused the house to go well over 100 degrees which friend the other 3 tanks. We had over $22,000 just in our 2 reef tanks because of what we purchased. We were always on the hunt for expensive and hard to find corals, inverts etc. We had a real rose tip anemone that cost us $400 that everyone said would die that we kept for well over 1 year before this accident.

We had puffers, sharks, triggers etc in our agressive tanks (150g / 40g) and all kinds of corals in the 90 & 70 gallon tanks. Here is a URL to some old pictures of my tanks, these are a few years old when they were first being established and were first stocking the 70 gallon and had just built the 150. We build the stand and everything ourselves, which saved us a ton and was a lot of fun.

We also build our own refugium and everything for the 150 gallon. We called it "150 on a budget" I think the entire tank / stand / equipment cost us $275 to build. The fish were more expensive than that I believe when you also add in live rock, sand etc. I even helped start a saltwater fish site that seems to be doing pretty well.

Anyhow here are the pics of my tanks back when we first started them.
My old fish tank pictures

BTW: I live right down the street from the largest coral propogation facility in the world (50,000+ gallons of croals) Check out their site http://www.tropicorium.com for anyone who lives in Michigan I suggest checking them out.

What types of lighting you running Halides? Full spectrum? I had VHO's on my 70 gallon 400+ watts and was running halide on my 90g 10000k bulbs. I had a 7500k bulb but it was way to bright and didn't bring out colors

AM Jeff - Did you have to do anything special to get your clowns to spawn or did they just do it themselves (no pun intended)?

Beautiful tanks BTW.

I had a 50 tank going, starting on its way, lots of life...it was beginning to become well established. When I moved to Sac I had to leave it in my old house in Tahoe for a few weeks until I could pick it up. Well a snow storm came through and the power was out for 4 days...so my tank turned into 50 gallons of cold soup.

I lost:

Mulitple Mushroom corals
Maroon Clown
Mandarin Goby
Red Eyed Cardinal
Cleaner Shrimp
Mithrax Crab
Tons of Snails
Tang
Green Star Ployps
25 lbs of Premium Fiji LR
35 lbs of Tonga Branch LR
a ton of money and a years worth of Love and Effort.

*sniffle*

I will start a new one soon.

I have MH on my 250 and VHO's on my 75 and 38.

Yanno..I really don't have about $15K in my tanks.

My LR, the LFS wanted $7.00 a pound for it. Which I about fell over. So, I took a 2 hour drive up to Indy and bought about 500 Pounds worth or Live Rock from Premium Aquatics and paid $2.25 for fully cured Fuji.

Then maybe started out with about $500 in corals, most of them frags from Coral Dynamics website.

My Skimmers, I have a Remora on my 38 and a Pro version on my 75G. Total there about $300.
My 250G. Now thats another story..lol
I have a EuroReef CS8-2 Skimmer in a 30G sump. That set me back $500 alone.

2 B-oinic Dosers at 300 bucks.

My lighting systems I maybe spent 1000 bucks total between all 3 tanks.

Sandbed is 4-5 inches deep in all tanks and full of critters.

On 75G..I have a custom made refumgium and grows capalra and full of pods and such. Si, I have very little trouble with aglae in any of my tanks.

So...in reality..not inclusing the tanks and stands. I have maybe, $5,000 wraped up in that..if that.

With tamks, stands, and canopies..maybe $7K.

But to me..the investment alone in one tank is worth it.

Gives me a hobby, a way of learning about marine life and a chance to relax from stress of the biz.

Hoax,

Damn..i know how ya feel about your lost.
Been there before.
We had a storm about 4 years ago in May and killed our power for 3 days. Damn..I had no way of skimming and had to do a water change every other day.

I did have a battery power air pump as a backup to at least give the fishes some air..lol

For as the clowns spawning. Mine just did it on their own.
I have heard ya can buy them moon lights or whatever. The key thing is to get mature pairs of clowns that are paired.
I got lucky and paid 2 adults quicky.

Other than that. From Inland Aqualitcs website. located in Terre Haute, In..ya can buy mature clowns for around $100.

When they spawn...its up to them.

Here another thing. My BTA, which never has moved since day 1 when I put him in the tank. They say True Perculas won't host in them. I have to BTA in 2 tanks and they stay put. Guess where my clowns host at?

Ya can also use like hairy mushorroms and stuff for them to host on. Even Leather Coarals too. They like something, somewhat stingy.

I'm used to people in this business lying about how much money they make and what kind of car they drive but I can't believe someone would lie about the fishtank they own.

Jeff, that tank is larger than 250 gallons and below is a thread from another board posted by the person who actually owns the tank.

http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=22418

It's amazing what people will do for attention.

Wethoney, I'm not doubting that your tank is yours or that it is 300 gallons, but what are the dimensions of the tank. It looks kind of short length wise. I ask becuase I'm going to be setting up a large reefs soon and I'm trying to figure out where and what dimenions. Thanks.

It's not odd, he's a liar

Notice he said he had a skimmer in a 30 gallon sump. Notice in one of the real pictures that there is a skimmer as tall as the tank standing next to the tank.

Like I said, sad that someone would lie about a fishtank. Weird biz we're in

Jeff, I never said anything about what you make. Why are you so defensive about it. Personally I don't care what you make. All I said was about the tank. Which is pretty obviously a lie if you look at the other pictures and read that thread. What you posted about it just doesn't match up

Wethoney, I was just curious as I'm trying to find something between 300-500 gallons that will fit well in the living room. Never doubted you, just curiosity on my part.

But 299 isn't 300 so HA! j/k

I've seen places that carry non-custom up to 1050 gallons. It's just sometimes hard to picture how things will wind up laid out with different heights and widths. Easier seeing them to get an idea of how square or rectangular a tank is. I think I may wind up with something around 96x24x36 or so. Leaves enough rooom in the stand for a good size sump and refugium (yeah, yeah, i know it should be above the tank )

I dunno if you seen them or not yet.
But I have a buddy of mine that wons Fishy Business down in Bolwing Gree, Ky.
He is the one who makes the rotating aquariums.
Kinda neat.

He's the first one ever to make one that does rotae where you can see all sides of the tank.
Also, the first ever in the US to successfully breed organge brittle stars and been featured twice on Aqurium magazine.

I'm building him a website if he ever gets the rest of the photos for me to finish his site. I'm doing it in exchange for products.

If you never seen a rotating tank.
Here is the link for it off my design site.

Hey PK. Have you figured out how to type in rainbow on here yet?

Jeff, Cool tank design. I just wonder if it would annoy the fish or not. I know I'd be pissed if my furniture kept spinning. Are you ready to admit about BS'ing the photos yet?

Jeff, Cool tank design. I just wonder if it would annoy the fish or not. I know I'd be pissed if my furniture kept spinning. Are you ready to admit about BS'ing the photos yet?
Yeah, GoGo. It's a real pain!

Damn impressive pics...

What kind of investment (time and money) are we talking for a beginner to set up a nice tank?

Better start the financing process.... it's going to cost thousands. My tank cost nearly $300 a month just in electricity.
