He's wavering cause he knows if mom gets him a classic he can't mess with it. He was looking at the Tiburon's online last night because of the agressive body kits you can by for them. It's a different flavor for him every week. Last week it was a Celica.

1992 Civic LX 4 door for me. 160,000+kms, rust all over it, bumper half off, etc. I know it will eventually happen. Civics are fucking easy to break into, espially ones that old.

My own ol man was pretty tough on me about that when I was 16-17, he wouldn't budge an inch. He wouldn't match any amount, nothing. He said "If you want a car, go buy one"..... So.... I got a job, that was #1. Then I saved a few hundred bucks, and I went to my bank for a small loan. I borrowed $1200, and bought myself a used '74 Chevelle Malibu, and paid off that loan in 1 year flat. I had to beg my ol man to co-sign for that loan, but since he didn't have to fork out any actual money he was okay with it.

I know two things from that experience:

1) I appreciated that car and cherished it like a baby.

and...

2) if I had've defaulted on those loan payments, my dad would have sold that car to pay off the loan.

I'm sure your family's situation and mine are a bit different. Everyone's is. My parents bought my first car for me, but I had to pay for every drop of gas that went in it and if my grades dropped to cause the good student discount on insurance to go away I'd of had to pay the increase too. Same goes for my kids. I think I turned out okay.

I admit I wasn't very happy about it at the time. As a teenager I certainly would have liked it if my parents had bought me a new car, but it wasn't very long after I bought my car that I realized the wisdom of my dad's ways. It was a good life-lesson.

I took this car (Ford Pinto) to a high-crime shopping mall and left it unlocked with the keys in the ignition. I came back several days later and, much to my disgust, it was still there.

My Chevy Vega actually broke in half going over railroad tracks. The whole rear end came around slightly to the front, sort of like a dog wagging its tail.

I once test drove a Yugo, during which the radio fell out, the gear shift knob came off in my hand, and I saw daylight through the strip around the windshield.

The Yugo's first stop after the showroom was the service department: 'Fill 'er up and replace the engine!'

Any time we made a right hand turn (in a Yugo), we all had to lean to the right to prevent the driver's side rear tire from scraping against the wheel well.

At least (the Yugo) had heated rear windows--so your hands would stay warm while you pushed.

My eldest Daughter keeps bugging from time to time, she is in College. The answer is no, wait till you are finished with your studies. Until that time she has to suffer with driving my Jag around, poor thing !
