Gimp Vs Photoshop

Does anyone here use gimp rather than photoshop?

I use gimp but is photoshop worth buying?

If you have both what do you prefer. I only installed gimp because it was similar to ps and its free.

I remember getting ps in the past and it was really slow and kinda buggy, I have used gimp for a while now and I've never had any problems, everything loads pretty fast and its never froze on me.

I only use Photoshop because I'm too lazy to learn how to use Gimp.
If I were you I would stick to Gimp unless you're a designer and really needs all feature it have to offer.

I was just looking online and found an interesting analogy.

It's like wondering which is better? A Miata or a Ferrari? Both will get you across town to work each day. I am pretty sure you can figure out the obvious choice.

I suppose it depends what you do with it. Light editing? I'd say go with GIMP... and it's free.

Yea thats the only problem, you gotta learn how to use the other if you want to switch. If you use ps I think you could learn how to use gimp very quickly.

I don't make a living doing designs but I do still make some myself, I usually pay for my designs because I'm not a professional and if I want something good made I pay for it

I'm still thinking about getting ps though but so far gimp has everything ps has, if I'm mistaken?

maybe check out http://psd.tutsplus.com/tag/basix/. If you decide you want to see better, more detailed examples, they have a 9 dollar monthly charge for the advanced tuts section. Could always spring for a month and check out the more advanced stuff to help determine if PS may be easy or not to use. sure, you're spending 10 bucks to watch tutes on software you don't have but it's probably a good investment before spending 600 bucks and being disappointed.

View some of their basic tutorials to get a better understanding of the PS interface etc to maybe compare it with what you are using now. They should have some video tuts you can watch for free in the basic section should you decide not to get a membership.

Best of luck to ya.

Until Gimp throws in the same filters Photoshop has, it is pointless to re-learn all of the shortcuts I have ingrained into my brain for over a decade.

even the cut down version of photoshop (photoshop elements i think it was called) was miles better than gimp. although this was years ago i used either gimp or ps elements. maybe its changed but i wouldn't be uninstalling ps tbh

To my knowledge, he stated he has Gimp installed but not photoshop. I figure if he watches some video tutorials that show you exactly how to do certain stuff using PS, it would be somewhat helpful. Again, I think he already has Gimp installed but is curious about Photoshop.

Here is a link to Adobe's filter reference. Unforunately there arent images for every filter, but if one sounds intriguing, you can google "photoshop photocopy sample, photoshop displace sample, photoshop gaussian blur sample" etc. and find some examples.

Gimp is a terrible program. Tried it for a week, felt like I was trying to design with two broken arms.

this sums it up. i use both sparingly, gimp even less. gimp gets the job done, but photoshop is quicker and easier. only reason i have gimp is its a small program and it is only for an emergency basis on my laptop

if its for full time and lots of editing, its obvious which one to get

I'm lost whenever I use Photoshop. I've been using GIMP for 14 years. I'm not a designer, but I use it to process photos, do screencaps and thumbnails, some basic logo design, shit like that.

I find that most of the people who rely on Photoshop don't even use the features that GIMP lacks. Not that I expect anyone to convert, but to say that it doesn't have your features just because you haven't learned the software is silly.

They aren't even in the same league, I would just get some older photoshop cs2 or something, can probably get it on ebay for like $50 bucks...

yea exactly. not all of us are designers and designers are a dime a dozen. if u need art, just hire them and let them pay the ridiculous PS license fees.

not everyone that needs graphics tools needs photoshop, although i am sure Adobe would be happy to see this thread.

From some time I'm using freeware Paint.NET (website design sucks...). It's free, small, FAST, packed with nice features and more Photoshop-like than GIMP. For basic photo edition it perfect.

Pixar and ILM (George Lucas's special effects studio) choose Gimp. Those who don't like it may not be as familiar with Gimp as they are with Photoshop, or they may have a personal preference. To say Gimp sucks is to say that the major Hollywood film studios are clueless. Clearly Gimp has some major good points or it wouldn't be the tool of choice for Hollywood blockbusters. Personal preference is a different thing.
