Read the article. It says "..the goal is to protect those who hold rights to concerts... like, say, event organizers, or the band." It's the copyright holders that are probably complaining, not Apple.

It's kind of dumb anyway. Except for a few quick photos or short clips that I might take, I keep my camera in my pocket at a show. I want to enjoy the show, not waste time shooting it.

Exactly. If I want some footage of my girlfriend dancing at the concert or some quick snaps of cool parts if the show, I'm entitled to it.

This could be the beginning of all sorts of restrictions.

They can fuck themselves if they start participating and facilitating what I can do with my 500 dollar phone and 200 dollar a month bill.

Let's see how this plays out.

The phonecam videos shot at live concerts that I've seen are just incredibly bad. Shaky video, ridiculously bad audio--which is what's important at a musical event. Maybe Gen X, Y, Z or whatever, think that kind of quality is acceptable, but I don't. Yes, go see the band live, then buy the DVD... it's just the smart thing to do.

I hate to think that company will try and stop me from doing something I want, but I also hate seeing 100+ tiny glow screens up in the air at a concert. I want to enjoy a concert, not see your phone held high in the air so you can record it. If you want to record a show go stand in the back and shoot it from there.

I wonder if Apple would reconsider if a good portion of the iphone base, just upped and left for another mobile platform?

99% of their users left their desktop platform, partly because of Apple's desire to control 100% how their devices are used, and they didn't change. Apple had been that way for their entire history. Witness Job's recent comment about non-kid friendly apps "people who want to see that stuff should get an Android phone". Good idea.

I went to a concert last month, and was stunned that nearly half of the people there were holding up their fucking cell phone to take some crappy footage instead of enjoying the show.

WTF is the point of taking a crappy video that most likely be forgotten about and deleted two weeks later?

Before the digital age there were still similar rules in place, restricting camera use in concert settings. This is nothing new... only the technology is new.

Correct.

You are paying for a seat at a concert venue. You are NOT paying for the recording, and rebroadcasting rights to the concert you are attending. Whether it be on your Facebook or Youtube pages. Whether it is crappy or not is irrelevant.

It makes me laugh the endless hypocrites who bitch daily on GFY when someone steals their content and puts it on a tube site. Then in the next breath, is throwing a tantrum when other "artists" or copyright owners take steps to lock down their own content to protect their revenue (i.e. concerts).

Priceless.

Whether or not people are using their iphone to videotape concerts is irrelevant to me. What matters is that Apple thinks it has the right to decide how you can use your device after you've bought it.

What if Ford decided you were no longer allowed to use their cars to drive to a stripclub? Yes, it's ridiculous, but so is everything Apple is doing.

Amen.

Amazes me when i'm stood next to someone who seems to damn the whole fucking thing. How can they possibly be enjoying it ? Standing recording it just to post it the following day "oh look how awesome my night was"

Yeah great...

Ford doesn't allow you to used their cars in bank robberies.

If they had a switch to cut off cars that are robbing banks then they would use it.
And more people would buy Ford because that proves they are not criminals.

But seriously, going to a strip club is not violating any federal laws but recording
copyrighted performances is.

In the old days, the concert crew searched you for camera's and didn't let
you in with one.

So what's the difference except now they turn your phone off instead of searching
you. Which do you prefer?

go back to putting shitty ass optics in the phones - this would solve the problem. Three years ago 'concert camera footage' was bullshit coming off a mobile phone. Very dark, very poor audio.

1. Why does everyone think that every fucking phone is the world is an iPhone?

2. I've never seen a concert video(especially from an amateur phone vid) that would make me skip seeing a band live.

3. It's Steve Jobs being gay again. This kind of shit is why I hate Apple.

I have to disagree here. I saw my favorite punk rock band Bad Religion recently in Boca Raton at an awesome outdoor venue called the Sunset Cove Amphitheatre and even though I didn't bother recording the show on my cell, there were dozens of other people recording it on phones or pocket camcorders. And some of the recordings were of quite decent audio and video quality. I thought it was great that I could watch much of the exact show I attended the very next day and for all time going forward on YouTube.

These kinds of fan recordings capture unique moments in time that would otherwise be lost to recorded history. For example sometimes a guest musician or musicians may appear with your favorite band in a given city on a particular evening; or they may play a song that they don't usually play; or something else interesting happens on the night. The official DVDs they release once every few years (if that) doesn't encompass everything.

With the ubiquity of cell phone cameras and small pocket camcorders with stereo sound capability, most bands and concert venues have completely done away with trying to stop fan recordings. I don't really think it hurts an esstablished band like Bad Religion anyway, since they tend to have really dedicated fans like myself who have been seeing them for years (No Control tour in '89 was my first!), own every CD, own every official concert DVD, and multiple t-shirts.

I will only agree that bad religion is the best fucking band ever...

we followed them on tour once.. Ive seen them live 76 times .. I wanted to do 77 a while back when they were here but it did not work out that way......

I dunno im old school... i'll only go to punk shows if they are 21 and over.. all these kids now a days with the fucking iphones and weak ass circle pits, the wanna be mohawks, the fake doc's... I remember a BR show in Tijuana where some guy climbed up on the 3rd floor to dive in the pit.. all we saw was feet disapear ... now those are shows... now a days you bump into someone holding a phone they want to fight you... I had to tell a guy the other night at Authority Zero that this is a fucking punk show.. you don't want your phone knocked out of your hand put it in your fucking pocket..... or don;t stand so close to the fucking pit so you can film.....

Priceless.
Exactly, these adapt or die people should just die. lol.
On another board a human dildo is complaining his site content got ripped then in another thread he's bragging about stealing copyrighted music for his tours, telling the artists and the record labels they can suck it. Fucking hypocrite POS.

If this happens right behind it will be cops wearing little camera blocker broadcasters to prevent people from videotaping them with their phones. I suppose their car could have the broadcaster, but either way... Would not surprise me one bit.

Amen to that! If you want to see some really cool newer Bad Religion performances they played some songs in studio for one of the AOL Network sites last year with really great video and audio quality that you can also find on YouTube.com. First of all, whoever engineered the sound for AOL did an awesome job- probably the best mixes I have ever heard, very noticeably so if you have a good sound system hooked up to your pc. It's also nice for an old school fan like myself to to see Brett play third guitar as he hasn't performed live with the rest of the guys on the East Coast in years. Here's one of my faves off the latest CD.

The massive percentage of people holding their damn phones up for the entire length of the concert annoys the fuck out of me.

LOL, I won't be switching to an iphone anytime soon. Those clips, pics and videos they are trying to stop are free ads that make people actually want to go see a concert. Another example of something that sounds like a good idea but will end up biting them in the ass.

I went to my first concert around 1976. Lynyrd Skynyrd and Atlanta Rhythm Section at the Miami Jai Alai Fronton. Since then I've been to well over a hundred and over the years I've tried many times to bring in a SLR film camera and almost always I've been turned away at the door by security due to restrictions placed by the performer, promoter or venue. They certainly had the right to do so and it was easy for them to enforce it.

Around 1998 Motley Crue came to Orlando for their Bootleg Tour and lifted the no photography restriction to allow anyone with a still or video camera almost all access. Somewhere I have about 6 VHS-C tapes of classic Crue and the strippers coming in to see them

Anyway, no photography at concert venues has been the norm up until cameras came in cell phones and it became to hard to police it. Looks like they are working on a solution to gain back control of their property.

I agree 100%. Recording a concert without the permission of the artist is theft, plain and simple.
