something tried to eat my dog last night

12-11-2011, 05:15 AM

it's one of those things you know could happen but don't really expect... I put Killer out front about 8pm.... went into the kitchen, then I heard barking... like WTF???? Killer really hasn't done any barking...

he's 3 months old and weighs in at 30+ pounds... so I pull open the front door and there's Killer barking his ass off backed up against the door... out in the yard I see a couple of wolfs????? I know what coyotes look like and these bad boys were not coyotes... about the size of a Shepard with gray fur, white around the face...... they saw me when I open the door and walked off into the bushes...

man, didn't know they had wolves around here.. any way it's the fenced backyard for Killer from now on unless I'm out there with the .45

Wow amazing story I would love to see wolves in my garden. Not nice for your dog of course and I'm glad he didn't get injured or killed. I read a lot about cats in the US killed b coyotes, that is a big problem over there, right?

The only wild animals I get in my garden here are fox, badgers and deer. The fox get around my cats sometimes and my cats walk into them in the forest but the fox don't harm my cats, probably because by the time the fox is near the cat, the cat is already in the top of a tree.

All rabbits eaten by the wolves and they came back for more.... so at all these places where there's too many rabbits, release some wolves.

What they do here in France is first try to kill all the fox, then the next year they're loads of rabbits everywhere, and they try to shoot all the rabbits. Just leave the foxes alone and things will be in balance.

Yeah it's that time of year. Where in SoCal are you? I'm in Monarch beach, OC at the ocean and we get coyotes here in packs of 3 or 4 never seen a wolf, though a mountain lion killed a jogger out here a few years back. Saw a huge Mule deer with big antlers run into a moving car on my way home the other night. He left a huge dent in the side and was dazed for a while, the cops came, and he ran off. Must be the full moon and eclipse

Damn! I know excactly what you mean by what it could have been.

A couple years ago, I heard screeming outside, really fucking load noise! Or atleast I thought it was screeming, I looked out the window and there was this large dog/cat looking animal in the road.

It then came down the yard which is about 200 feet long in a matter of seconds and stopped just outside my window.

Wasn't a fox, it was too big.
Wasn't a cayote, it had a square shaped snout.

I'm still trying to figure out what it could have been, and my only ideas are Canadian Lynx or a Cougar.

Either way I wish it would came back (as crazy as that sounds) So I could get a video or picture of it.

Get a game cam and tie it to a tree. I have one and captured all kinds of animals around my house, will make a compilation soon and post it.

Foxes make amazing loud and crazy sounds by the way, if vixens walk into each other in spring they don't attach each other but start screaming at each other, it's very crazy and wild, it sounds like dogs being slaughtered. Once you get used to it it actually gets funny.

If you want to figure you what you heard, listen to all kinds of animal noises on Google, that's how I learned that what I was hearing sometimes were these vixens.

Wolves hunt other animals such as deer, controlling the population. Without the wolves, there would be too many deer and not enough food so they would starve to death. Any eco system needs its share of plants and animals to keep things in balance in order to survive.

The problem is known as "Clear Cutting"

Forestry companies cut down too many trees in places such as California and BC as seen in the image above, which forces animals such as wolves into areas populated by Man to look for food.

If your poor pooch gets eaten alive by Wolves, find the company doing the clear cutting in the closest forest to you, find the CEO of that company, and then clear-cut his fucking balls balls off.

I think you will find they were coyotes. My brother lives in Socal and he and I have seen them. Friends live up in the canyons in NE LA and their problem is mountain lions and coyotes.

This is the local breed of of wolfdog here. Make great pets. Very playful with humans and other dogs. The neighbors have one.

Californian wolf.

What ever, you need to get a collar for the dog that makes it very hard for a predator to get his teeth around his neck and be careful letting him out.

That coyote is beautiful, it looks a tiny little bit like the fox but I guess it's larger and stronger than a fox? Do coyotes attack pet dogs, something foxes don't do?

Unfortunately, people cross breed those things and then are unable to handle them. I have friends up in Nor Cal doing that right now. I have no idea why anyone would want to try and domesticate a litter of like 12 puppies mixed with wolf. Yes, he posted the pics on Facebook. WOLVES. lol

I've had dogs run away as a kid, no doubt wolf hybrids can get loose and do alright in the wild.

I grew up in So Cal, the coyotes are little things and yeah they'll get your cats and small animals. But they are easily identifiable and I don't see how confused with a wolf if you got a decent look at them. Coyotes are like half the size of a big dog.
