    So I bought a car for my daughter-Pure hell

    So I send my daughters out looking at cars, with strict instructions to call me ONLY if a good deal. Find a couple I make a offer on two at full retail, I'm not looking for a great deal, I just want this to be as painless as is possible. Both offers at full retail were turned down. Dealers lots empty of customers yet they won't budge on prices, both were $2000 above retail. This is for a used car. They always try to sneak this "dealer's fee" in which is nothing more than extra profit for them.

    Finally I tell them to go to small buy here pay here lots and maybe we can find a small dealer that needs cash fast and is willing to come down. Finally find just such a small dealer, got a 2003 Jeep Cherokee limited v8 for $7000 including dealer fees. LOL. God I hate car shopping, I would rather get a root canal than shop for a car. I fucking hate it.

                      Some friends of mine sell the hell out of used cars, and its not their primary business, they just scour forums adn craigs list and low ball people, then turn around nad sell it to a dealer for a quick 500 to 1000 depending on the car..

                      they say that dealers are selling more used cars then new due to the economy.. which makes sense..

                                  Well I found this dealer on craiglist. In floirida if you buy from a private party you have to pay sales tax at time of title transfer. Problem with private parties is the time factor, gotta coordinate looking at the car when they are home, then doing buy at tag office, etc etc. It's a real pain.

                                                  Dealers always have to charge the fees. If they do it once they have to do it to everyone or they can get sued. So if you negotiate the price down they still have to include the fees they're just included at the lower price.

                                                          I bought the wife a Volvo on the internet last year. Hired an independent mechanic, local to the car, to check it all out. It was a great experience and the car is running awesome still.

                                                                      I would stick to Craigslist. If you know the car you want, you can sit and wait people out. Lowball until you get what you want. Even with paying for a mechanic's inspection you'll still pay way less than at a dealer.

                                                                          last car I bought I did all the negotiation over the phone, told the guy this is the price and this is what I'll pay. Before I left I told him I'm bringing a cashiers check for the exact amount, and not a penny more. was in and out of the dealer in 20 minutes, best experience ever

There was a story in the news about a group that steals cars, sells them on CL, then steals them again from you and resells them. An endless circle until the cops get a car back and even then you are screwed.                                                                                   Craigs list is a great place to pick cars up cheap ... I actually believe the story about the guy buying them there and reselling to a dealer.

                                                                                  A lot of used cars got murdered by the thieving governments cash for clunkers program where they forced dealers to destroy perfectly good used cars and helped ignorant idiots buy cars they couldn't afford

                                                                                  That caused prices to go up

                                                                                  And a lot of idiots can't afford to hemorrhage money out buying brand new any more, so they're looking for used cars

I have found that they get their fee and are more willing to haggle on price. Then I pay it off in 3 to 4 months with quarter payments and he still got his flat fee... The bank gets mad that they don't get their interest... too fucking bad.

                                                                                                      Back then, I just wanted a 2nd car to throw the dogs in and so I wouldn't care about door dings while shopping..........I thought $6-700 and 10 years old wont be a problem. Boy was I shocked and its the same now.

                                                                                                      For example :

                                                                                                      I Just did a search for a year 2000 Ford Focus - approx 75k miles. Good body condition an no major faults.

                                                                                                          I cant stand dealing with auto dealers, I only buy new and only make take it or leave it deals payable by certified check to know I'm serious. A lot of them will call back in a few days. Always wait until its near the end of the month, they all have quotas to fill ;)

                                                                                                              Makes sense, but it is still a fee for the sole purpose of making the price more and more profit. Yep the dealer lowered the price to 6600 and still added the 399 fee. Point is I was trying to make is that when you ask what the price is very few dealers say blah plus a fee, they always sneak it in at the end as if it's sales tax or something.

However on a sunday at 7pm right before they closed the biggest new car dealership sales board had 1 sale for the entire day and it was a used car. Went next door to the second largest and they had 2 sales the entire day, 1 new and 1 used. Every lot I went to I was the only one looking at cars. I would much rather buy a new car, but there's no way in hell I'm buying a 18 year old a new car.

                                                                                                                              they make a pretty good profit on used cars, a $5k car that they are selling, they paid $3-$4k for it... so you should be able to knock off $500 with no sweat, more if you are good... I've never heard of dealer not negotiating on the price, you must probably be doing something wrong...

I gave her a kelly bluebook, NO CASH, told her to go find a good deal and call me when she found something worth me coming to look at. She needs to learn how the world works, holding her hand thru simple things like shopping for a car does her no good. She now knows what and where the mileage is, how to check tire pressure and inflate tires, change wiper blades, check oil, transmission oil, rad fluids, waxing using a orbital buffer, etc etc. I had my other daughter spray painting today. Tomorrow she's gonna be raking up pine needles and putting a emergency sprinkler system together in 98 degree heat. Anything at all they can learn to do will make them more rounded. I don't hesitate to give either of them very dirty and hard jobs.

                                                                                                                                                                  Sometimes you need to play the other role to get it done. Get him excited, get him thinking your going to sign and when it comes down to it, low ball his ass. Keep telling him you love the car, this is all you can afford etc....

                                                                                                                                                                  He goes back to manager. Comes back with another price. Tell him you cant do it but dont see yourself in anything else. Come up a little on price and write a note "i will buy this car right now for $X,XXX" give him the down payment or the cash and ask the sales guy to try harder with the manager.

They go for 5 to 6 at dealer auctions. Altogether between me and my daughters we prolly looked at 20 Cherokees. This one was by far the best priced. Others were asking 12 to 15 for the same thing.

                                                                                                                                                                              He sleazy, well I will be driving it also, and it's a small V8. Plus I need a V8 as I tow a lot of different things. So far the display reads 14 MPG. That's not as bad as my Durango with the Hemi. The v6 Cherokees felt too underpowered for my taste. I live in a dangerous place, we may have to evacuate at a moments notice. I can pull the 22 foot long car trailer with my durango and she can pull one of the 10*12 trailers with her cherokee if we have to get out of dodge. Right now there is a brushfire less than 2 miles from me. No fire hydrants within miles of my house and I'm surrounded on three sides by thick areas of pine trees. I'm actually boxing up some stuff today just in case. LOL

That's one of the reasons they end up with money in the first place. I have a friend in NYC with a car lot, and he tells me that the HARDEST customers BY FAR to deal with are the rich ones buying expensive cars that argue over every nickel and dime.

                                                                                                                                                                                          Thanks to Obama's cash for clunkers and the earthquake in Japan used car prices are high. It is a sellers market for sure. You are going to have to look for someone desperate to sell to get any kind of deal.

                                                                                                                                                                                                  Yeah all the dealers were telling me that they have to pay more at auction. I know what the market here is and I know I got a great deal. Always gonna be soemone posting a better deal on some website etc, but at the end of the day I got a way better price than I had hoped for. But it was still not fun. What I detest the most is wasting time with a salesman only to have my reasonable offers rejected. I mean i was offering full retail, but in the end the car I got, I got at way below full retail so it all worked out for the better.
