i was running Tube Site Submitter last night and one of the tubes it submitted to gave my laptop the "Windows XP Recovery Virus"!!! i spent most of the day trying to remove it but eventually had to call Dell support and it's costing me $130 to get it removed as i write this thread.

Have you tried using an OS and browser that isn't riddled with holes? Just a suggestion...

ouch

why waste $130?
too late now, should've posted here.. takes a few min but getting rid of a virus and contributing files isn't impossible.

use microsoft security essentials.. its free.. and good.

and Belarc Security Advisor spots rogue files .. even hidden and super-hidden files installed by the virus. Remove via terminal mode.

Have a nice evening.

nothing would work. i tried system restore but it wouldn't work. it takes dell over an hour on average to remove the virus and that's a tech who has removed dozens of them so i don't have the luxury of fucking around with this any longer.

it burns my ass to spend the money but it's costing me more to have my machine down.

at least the $130 covers a year of software warranty so that does help.

unfortunately Tube Site Submitter isn't available in a Mac version so you have to run it on a PC right now. when i find out which tube gave me the problem i'll post it here.

the intent of the virus is to trick the person into buying the software to remove it but it's a scam to get your credit card info.

... dude... Macs aren't safe either :P I was referring to practically any *nix distro (But not all).

But if you absolutely must use windows, invest in getting VMware, or grab up Virtual Box (Free), and run an isolated copy of Windows. (VirtualPC is supposed to be something like that, didn't look into it..)

Most of these VM's also support snapshots, so you can just revert the entire machine to a specific time.

Wow, 130$ Maybe Dell guys are running these tubes themself, just imagine if every customer pays them 130$, that's a very good business idea. To plant the virus (actually spyware in this case) for free, and then ask 130$ to fix it

ya, it's a rip and they know the average person isn't going to sit in front of their computer for a day trying to figure out which program will get rid of it. and, some of those "free" programs just ad more shit on your machine.

It never runs right after a virus, just backup your files and reinstall windows.

Like I said, just install a *nix distro. And run anything iffy in a Virtual Machine... Why do people keep reading over this!

Don't run the submitter with admin privileges or run it inside virtualbox/vmware.

1: Use a OS that isn't 500 years old.
2: Instead of calling support, use your brain.

Yeah once I was so angry on Windows that I actually switched to Ubuntu. I actually believed that I can find every program substitute, which I need as a webmaster.

Man, I was so happy to go back to windows 3 days after.. And never looked back

The only thing I use *nix on my virtual machine now, is for browsing porn, while looking for new sponsors/niches/ideas

I never said that you would be able to find an substitute/alternative of every program you used. That's where the virtual machine comes in Or you can first try using WINE with it and use it that way.

Yeah, so here comes with question, what is better -

To have *nix and emulate all windows programs?

Or to have *windows and emulate the *nix browser?

For myself, I'm going with the 2nd option

WINE - WINE Is Not An Emulator

But I guess the best of both worlds for you guys is running windows inside windows, with snapshots so you can revert to a previous state. (Just for in case the programs you use have some nasties in them themselves)

this one was really fucked up. the tech worked on it for about 6 hours yesterday and another tech has been working on it for an hour this morning.

dell wanted me to get System Mechanic but wouldn't Windows Security Essentials do the same thing?

Wait, so this AUTOMATICALLY infected you? Because if i'm right, this virus requires you to save an .EXE and execute it? Can you explain what happened because i've used Tube Site Submitter before and would like to avoid this happening to me.

Can you say browser exploit? Then again, I haven't ever used Tube Site Submitter, so I have no idea what it does. (E.g. launching an external browser to post them, or some other really overcomplicated and convoluted way... )

you can remove it with system restore but you need to restart in safe mode in order to be able to use system restore with this kind of virus.
