I sadly know someone who was on the show.
The show its self is set up heavely. All those shopping are pre set up. The store specials orders for that person and it is let known ahead of time what they would be doing. It is possible to do that kind of stuff yes but only if you live in a city that has stores that would double coupons. A few years ago i bought a website that had to do with couponing. I bought it from a lady that my friend who was on the show knew. I bought it and let them run it still and paid them a % of the money it earned. About a year ago when that show first started airing pilot episodes late late at night the website took off like crazy and now gets about 100k+ SE traffic after the show airs and a few days following. My wife and I do it save coupons just for the fun of it but never to those extremes like our friend does. Chris

I saw one clip where the grocery store had to give them $2 back for the groceries they "purchased." Insane.

most of the products looked like shitty processed foods and things that you probably wouldnt normally buy .
Besides that 60 hours a week spent on this is stupid...so in affect they are working for $400-$1160 (Gift in kind) a month on the high end? That's no payoff to me |

Overage is very easy. Right now you can go to coupons.com and print out a razor coupon - the brand name is wilkerson or something like that. It is $1.00 off. Walmart has them for 96 cents.

It's such easyyyy money aswell. These coupon ppl have the mentality of putting their email address in every box they can in hopes of getting coupons in their emails.

The next show the lady on it amanda will be talking about 'ethical couponing' as she was pretty upset how they spun her story as a gready hoarder who just buys up a bunch of stuff when in reality they set it all up for her and told her to buy that. They even provided a bunch of the coupons lol
Not everyone who does the coupon thing buys 50 of each item that they can get for free. Alot of ppl wait until things like laundry soap - soap - body wash - tooth brush - tooth paste go on sale and they have coupons that make it free and then they have enough to last them awhile and then donate most of it to ppl who need it

I saw one where a guy was extreme couponing for his church group so they would give the food/products away to needy families and homeless.

Coupons come from print outs (ie: coupons.com ) and inserts in sunday papers. The three major ones are Smart Source , Red Plum & P&G.

One of the episodes did to a degree. They said the woman bought about 20 copies of the sunday papers plus she would go to all her neighbors and ask for their coupons that come in the mail each week. She also spent up to 20 hours a week online finding and printing coupons.

unfortunately the people who do that sort of shit abuse the system and for the most part treat employees like shit. I saw that show while its amazing, gave me flashbacks as a bagger in my highschool days and i wanted to punch the screen. Most are cheap inconsiderate people who turn around and goto swap meats with their 100 toothbrushes and toothpaste. In the end customers end up paying for increased prices and shitty terms.

Me and the GF are into Couponing alot more after a few episodes of the show here in Philly.
Luckily I have a GIANT foodstore that offers double coupons as well we have all the store cards to save a few bucks. Overall we save about $30-$40 on a $200 bill. I am sure there are a ton of horror stories where people went into a place with a pile of coupons and the hustle didnt work out .. then the Store help spends 10 hours putting all the shit back that the people walked out on. ..... My parents always used coupons, looked for sales and bought in bulk when it made sense ( dry goods, non-perishables) when I was growing up. To me this is nothing new ![]() |

I have also heard about the setups. My friend told me this:
"One of the episodes of TLC's Extreme Couponing featured a local woman. She was on a local tv talk show this morning and talked about tips for couponing, helped another local woman on a shopping trip, and then talked about her experience on the TLC show. She was one of the ones they showed dumpster diving for coupons. She said she does not get into dumpsters, that was just something they wanted her to do. On her episode, she was shown buying several cartfuls of groceries that totaled over $1000. She does not buy that much food ever and rarely buys the junk food that she bought that day. She also explained that anything free that she cannot use, she always donates. That show sort of portrays these people as a little crazy, so it was good to see that this one woman in particular is pretty normal in real life." The stockpiling people drive me bananas. I coupon but I only buy stuff I need and use common sense. Last week I got my bill down from $300 to $175 between the store discount card, paper coupons (some doubled) and e-coupons. I got 16 items for free - things like a frozen lasagna, hot dogs, johnsonville sausage, nathan's kiebalsa, nabisco wheat thins, real food... Anyone who buys 30 bottles of mustard just because they can for free or for cheap has issues. |

These extreme couponers are effectively bad for the economy. Their job is essentially to save money instead of make money. For all their effort, nothing is being produced or serviced.

The whole "Coupon" craze is blowing up. This girl lives near me and she has over 7k in followers on FB. She has classes (gotta pay to attend) where she explains her techniques. She's been on the show as well.

I tried that when I was young and poor, but you actually save fuck-all... if you buy stuff that you actually want and need, you will find maybe 10 coupons per shopping trip, so you save maybe $10... not terrible if you have nothing better to do, but in grand scheme of things $10 is nothing... you are better off spending that time on more productive activities...

My girlfriend isnt as extreme as those guys but she uses coupons from the sunday paper when she it matches something on her list.
She told me that because of this new interest in it, some of the stores that were offering stacking coupons are now stopping. Most of these people that bought 300 bucks worth of groceries for 10 bucks would stack coupons then use their store benefit card for it to work. heres one article about the kroger stores. http://moneysavingmom.com/2011/03/kr...n-houston.html |

I saw it a few weeks ago, that is CRAZY!
the thing is, you have to buy a bunch of shit that you normally dont use, like 200 packs of razors. If you think your going there to buy a weeks worth of groceries, its not going to happen for 90% off

I watched this the other week during a rare moment of sheer boredom. It was stunning.
I still don't understand how this works. A store has a product for $3, and it's on sale for a dollar off. Now the product is $2. But there is a coupon out there for a dollar off, and if it's used on double coupon day that dollar off becomes two dollars off, and it's two dollars off and the product is only two dollars..... It's nothing? Isn't there a rule about sale prices and coupons? Meaning, if something is on sale you can't use coupons?

Every store has rules, and the store gets the value they redeem for from the manufacturer so the money isn't really free. I have my wegmans shoppers club card, plus they double coupons up to and including .99, but they wont honor any coupon that has the word "free" on it. Such as buy one get one free they wont do.
A lot of it comes down to buying the right size to get the most bang. Such as if you have a 50 cent coupon and your store will double it and you buy the small $1.00 pack of product, it'll be free. It's the one time when getting the smaller package of something could be cheaper than buying the larger pack. Doesn't hurt to punch in your stores name to google find their website and read their policy at least. If you donate, then you can claim full retail at tax time I believe. So these people donating 10 grand in bodywash and toothbrushes might not be so dumb as we think.

I was amazed when I saw this show as well but it doesn't work in Canada. Most of the coupons here are limited with fine print..cannot be combined with other offers etc...

We coupon a LOT and while we'll never match their deals (no double couponing at any store near us). We plan our shopping trip before we get to the store.
Using the store card plus print coupons and a couple clipped from the Sunday paper (we also have a friend who does paper deliveries and gives us spare papers late Sunday nights after the stores stop selling them and start stocking the Monday paper). The good deals have dropped since Extreme Couponing but we still save on average 35-40%. It take my fiance approximately 2 hours of work to get everything clipped, printed, organized, etc. We plan the list together and knowing that we save on average $40 per shopping trip, it;s 2 hours well spent. $20 an hour is nothing to sneeze at. Those of you who make so much money that $40 is nothing, go ahead and paypal me $40 every week... ;) I'll use the $160 per month to buy about $210+ worth of groceries.

Finding printable coupons online is easy, there are databases everywhere. You can just type in what's on your list to get printables. http://www.momsneedtoknow.com/printa...upon-database/
My store doubles up to $1.00 coupons meaning unline other stores, they will double .75c for a $1.50 off discount. Then you can stack it with a store issued coupon often getting the item for cents on the dollar. As far as it hurting the economy, it doesn't. It keeps people buying brand name products - the company's incentive to keep sales up - so it generates business for the manufactuer. The stores are reimbursed face value (sometimes doubled) plus .8c handling fee per coupon. So it's not hurting the store either. These people on the show are extreme. These scenarios piss every day couponers off because it makes stores have stricter coupon policies that actually slow things down at the register. Most people I've seen who use coupons are organized and don't argue and don't want to inconvenience other people. I databased my savings the first 3 months of this year. I saved an average of 40% off my household shopping - $250-$300 per month. The only money I spend is $5 a month for the newspaper and printer ink and paper every few months. |
