well, as standalone code, sure it can't. But the thing is that with some customization or by using plugins (depending on what you need more or less) it can do it all. Of the ones you mention:
- sortable rated comments --> yes, you can build your own from scratch, use a plugin or do a small mod to any Comment rating plugin (basically take the DB and order it)

Can you point me to something that does it? Not being snarky, I would like to know if there is one. I searched high and low a couple of years ago and it appeared that not only were there no plugins, it was actually impossible to do that because of the way WP is built. Pretty sure with the update to version 3 they didn't add this feature or ability.

specialized forum --> I'm not sure what do you mean here, but WP has pretty good forum plugins OR you can make WP itself work as a forum. OR you can bridge it with most forum software

Yeah you can kludge WP into a "forum", but you can't pretend it's going to be better than using a real forum, like, say, myBB. And bridging is simply an admission that WP is no good for forums. :winkwink:

gallery --> please tell me you're kidding :Oh crap Not only WP has a built in gallery, but the gallery plugins for WP are the top of the crop

Yeah, I admit I was reaching with gallery, mainly because standalone gallery software is IMHO surprisingly sucky, but maybe that's more to do with looks than design. I admit WP has some very nice gallery themes and plugins.

video --> we've developed a video solution for WP that is 10 times faster than any free or commercial script, bundled or standalone. More complete, handles ANY (and I mean ANY) kind of video (avi, wmv, mpg, mp4, flv and even smaller video versions for mobile), creates galleries on the fly, rotating thumbs, assigns screencaps to posts, watermarks and so on.
|
Is that for 'public' video upload?

I don't know of any other CMS that can do this other than WP. But even without our script, there are hundreds of video plugins for WP, ranging from very simple to pretty complex

Video was also an afterthought, but I think something like
Mediacore is a better solution than WP for a video site.

As an example of what I mean, our multimedia manager script could work with Drupal and Joomla with some small mods, but... why bother? For the 3 persons that may use Drupal or Joomla? Seriously, it's just common sense. The day I see someone asking for Drupal or Joomla, that's the day I'll care about it, after all it's our business. In the meanwhile, it's just a waste of time

To be fair I think a lot of people do use Joomla and Drupal, or certainly used to. But there's no question I prefer Wordpress to either of them, not least because Google loves it. I looked at both, and a lot of other CMSs, years ago (someone mentioned MODx which I thought looked pretty good when I saw it) but after using Wordpress I haven't, unless I've had to, used anything else.
I still think, though, while you can do most things with WP, it's not necessarily the best solution for every type of site. I don't even think even Automattic would claim that.
