question for amazon kindle owners

I'm thinking of getting a Kindle. I have thought about just getting the wi-fi version, but I don't have Wi-Fi set up in my house. I could do that (and probably will some day) but as of now I don't. What I am wondering is can I buy a book on Amazon then download it to the kindle via a USB cable or some other hardwired connection until I get around to hooking up Wi-Fi?

Thanks

Yes you can get them on you PC and them move them to the kindle you can even read them on the PC now.

I got one for Xmas last year and have been reading a LOT of the classics. Best part about those is they are free.

The power plug doubles as a USB plug from the device to the PC to move the files.

Great reader for being outdoors which is something most others can NOT do.

I installed Kindle on a PC (in WINE on LINUX) works nicely.

My only complaint is that you cannot copy and paste passages from books that you want to save as notes.

I read that many books would become available soon in a borrowed manner from a free shared library — any details on this?

I wish the software for PC would add a bookmark feature. Or maybe I just haven't found it yet.

My question -- why in the world would you get anything but an iPad?

I actually thought about that. I thought I about getting the iPad and the Kindle app, but in the end that would force me to hook up Wi-Fi (not a terrible thing) and I really don't think I would use all the other features in an iPad that much. The only other thing I could see myself using it for would be online reading (blogs, magazines etc). Maybe I would use it, I'm just not sold that the cost is worth it when it boils down to how often I would use it and what all I would us it for.

If you are getting one for reading books just download to your computer then to the kindle. Keep it simple. You have a complete backup that way also, in case you lose or damage it.
