    Judge who beat daughter will not be charged

    McALLEN, Texas (AP) ? A Texas family law judge whose daughter secretly videotaped him savagely beating her seven years ago won't face criminal charges because too much time has elapsed, police said Thursday.

    "We believe that there was a criminal offense involved and that there was substantial evidence to indicate that and under normal circumstances ... a charge could have been made," Jayroe said. He said the district attorney determined he couldn't bring charges, and that police would discuss the case with federal prosecutors even though he doesn't believe federal charges would apply.

          I figured this statute was up. Real punishment will be him getting kicked out of office. Not sure if that is a elected or appointed position, but people should be able to apply pressure to his position.

                  i didnt expect anything to come of it, but glad to see he is at least being outed for his history of violence towards his wife and children.

                  having this type of person as a judge over child abuse cases is not good for any society.

                      From what I saw she got a 'whipping' not a 'beating', ie with a belt, not a clenched fist. Granted the 'turn around or I'll smack you in the face' (paraphrased from memory of seeing the video yesterday) was harsh.

                      From the whippings I got as a child, I learned not to squirm or you would end up getting accidentally hit on the hip or back of the thighs which is much worse than on the bottom.

                      The salient points:
                      1. She downloaded pirated content (the reason for the whipping).
                      2. Suspecting she was about to be punished, she set up a camera to capture the events on video.
                      3. Seven years later, she posts the video online.

                      Why wait that long? Sorry, but I think there is merit to his contention that she chose to post the video only now because he threatened to reduce her financial support and take away the Mercedes he paid for.

                      "William Adams, 51, issued a three-page statement Thursday saying his daughter posted the clip to get back at him for telling her he would be reducing the amount of financial support he gives her and taking away her Mercedes."

                          Something is wrong here. Why is the statute of limitations only seven years for something like this? Any crime involving children should have a long statute of limitations...

But doesn't the fact that she told him she had the video and that he "brushed it off" prior to her posting it smack of extortion? Combine that with the message she posted with the video saying "do not allow this man to be re-elected again" and it gives his version that she would make him sorry if he cut her off more credence. I'm not saying your interpretation is wrong, but without personally knowing the character of any of them, I would be more likely to believe your scenario if there were any other collaborative evidence to suggest a history of abuse than just this one video.

                                                                      Nice try, but the last time I raised a hand against anyone was in elementary school. (Though, I still flagellate myself daily, if that makes you feel any better ) My parents were loathe to use the belt until my bad behavior pushed them to it. At one point I was getting out of control and one particular whipping turned me around for good. I hate to think of the person I would have become if they hadn't.

                                                                                              Also, if you watch the video, he says: "get THE belt". Not just "get my belt" or "get a belt", but "the belt". You don't call it "the belt" if this was an incident. On top of that, her mother has already beaten her(you can hear her say that at the beginning of the video).

                                                                                              This wasn't a one-time deal and you know it.

                                                                                                                              Additionally, and I'm sure you'll love this, but I'll say it anyway: I think one reason thing's have gotten so bad is because many parents are too wishy-washy to show their kids the 'tough-love' they need to shape them into responsible adults. As a parent, you have the obligation to your child and to society to raise them with the understanding that actions have direct consequences. If you can accomplish that without spankings, great. Otherwise, there's a reason for the saying 'spare the rod and spoil the child.'

                                                                                                                              Was this father's spanking excessive? Probably. Does it alone constitute child abuse? I don't think so. Should he get some anger management therapy? I think that's a given.

                                                                                                                                                  she answered all of those questions on the Today Show. She got beat regularly that was the reason why she knew that type of beating was coming. And she waited because she was afraid and didn't know what would happen or what he would do to her. He (her father) continued to harass and belittle her as an adult. She told him she had the record and he didn't care so she released it. As a way of getting him to stop belittling her she released it.

                                                                                                                                                                              The real reason for the lack of charges is that A. she was 16 years old when it happened. In Texas the law defines a child as being 14 years old or younger and B. In that state the statute of limitations is 5 years and it had expired.

                                                                                                                                                                              There was also stuff saying that the father feels she has gone public with this because he has cut back on how much he supports her financially and is taking away the Mercedes she drives and she is pissed. She claims that she supports herself with occasional help from him and that this was a decision she made after talking to her mom.

                                                                                                                                                                              Sounds like a pretty messed up family.

                                                                                                                                                                                              Where this guy could ultimately pay is during the next election. His is an elected seat. If someone runs against him and brings this up, it could hurt him and he could lose his job. It may also be long forgotten by then especially if he runs unopposed.
