Has the BLS removed food or energy prices in its official measure of inflation? No. The BLS publishes thousands of CPI indexes each month, including the headline All Items CPI for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) and the CPI-U for All Items Less Food and Energy. The latter series, widely referred to as the "core" CPI, is closely watched by many economic analysts and policymakers under the belief that food and energy prices are volatile and are subject to price shocks that cannot be damped through monetary policy. However, all consumer goods and services, including food and energy, are represented in the headline CPI. Now, did you look at the links I provided that contain food and energy line items? |

I'm still waiting for you to come back about the two outdated links you posted |

Now go dig up some posts where you can show me supporting Obama. If you can't, then I'll consider that another retreat and concession. :1orglaugh |

You seriously don't see the relevance of that to both the OP and your claim that inflation has doubled? Did you even look at the monthly data for 2011 so far? Shall I do more work for you and cite them here? |

It's been fun watching you run around in circles, but I'm going out. |

Your links were to 2009 and 2010, The op was about recent gas prices, it's 2011 BTW |

It's also obvious you have no grasp of its relevance to both the OP (ie; why gas was so low in 2009) and your erroneous retort to bm bradley regarding inflation; nor did you take the time to even review the tables for 2011. Since you're either lazy or incompetent... Jan 0.4% Feb 2.1% Mar 2.7% |

Rather than provide the post, you merely responded with the irrelevant comment that you don't have a post where you supported Bush, which is something I never even brought up. I think you need to get your IQ test done for a 4th time. :1orglaugh:1orglaugh |

Vendzilla - one of the biggest partisan politicos on gfy.
Seriously dude, soon as I clicked this thread and saw it was you and politics, it's like "oh jesus christ". People like you who just try to split and polarize everything is everything that has been and will continue to lead us down the wrong direction. You don't like Obama, fine - who gives a fuck. But all you do is post negative talking points and sling shit at the other side. That's not any way to push for things to get better or get people to see the light. You're part of the problem, not the solution. |

I was for the stimulus, I was against the way it was implemented I'm for healthcare reform, I'm against the way it was implemented I'm against the two wars that Bush started, I'm against the two other countries that Obama is attacking. So instead of making broad strokes about my beliefs, try debating where I'm wrong? With 14.3% of the US population on food stamps, how are we doing? |

You keep bringing up inflation as the government measures it without food and fuel prices, when my op about it said gas prices. And keep bringing up links that don't reflect this year. And now your trying to skate around even more about a statement I made about me not supporting Bush, get back on track Are we better off as a nation now than we were two years ago? Yes or No |
Quote:

I read through some of this, and then I asked myself - am I better off than I was 2 minutes ago?
And the answer is - no, not so much. |

You can't argue that gas prices being higher today makes things worse off than 2 years ago because the reason gas prices were so low then was because we were staring a deflationary collapse in the face. Hence, the relevancy of the CPI numbers (both headline and excluding food and energy from 2009 to 2011) to answer your original question AND to show you that your claims about inflation TODAY are also MISGUIDED. One last time, the links to the BLS include CPI for both headline inflation and inflation excluding food and energy. If you look in the monthly releases for 2011 you can see that. And, since you clearly do not comprehend what you read and probably need a picture, there is a graph on page 5 of the March 2011 release that shows both CPI's for the last 10 years. Quote:
Don't confuse me addressing all your fallacious arguments for skating around. Quote:

Of course, that's not what you said, is it? You said inflation has doubled. Even so, you neither understand or acknowledge your mistake, nor do you understand the relevance of gas prices (now and then) as it relates to your question of whether we are better off today or 2 years ago. In your simpleton world view, it doesn't matter that gas prices being lower 2 years ago was actually because things were worse then, not better. IOW, prices then were a symptom of how bad things were. Are you really such a one dimensional thinker or are you just hard headed? |

Moreover, you failed to comprehend / acknowledge (for the umpteenth time) that the price of gas between 2009 and today does not indicate what you think it does or support your contentions. Quote:
Of course, you would know that if you bothered to look at the numbers. Quote:

I think I understand completely why this is so, but I've exhausted myself trying to explain it you so I'll just leave you to your misunderstandings. |

gas prices are double what they were 2 years ago, yes or no? Corn prices have gone up in the last year, beef has gone up please tell one food price in the US thats gone down? Kraft took two slices out there packages and sold it for the same price, other packaged foods are going down in size for the same price. |

And the thread is not entitled are you better, it's are "WE" better off. I just see 14.3% on food stamps in the US and I'm not happy when we are spending millions using drones in Pakistan |

Quote:
I agree with you on the drones in Pakistan, think we should bring as many of our troops as possible out of the whole region. But i think with all the natural resources especially those found in Afghanistan we will be there awhile. |
Quote:
Also, the particular point of gas prices goes beyond the mere meaning of one sentence. You use it in the OP to provide an example of things being worse. I've tried -- quite patiently I think -- to help you understand that you have that exactly backwards. You have already shown your true reason for the thread. I doubt this comes as a surprise to anyone who reads your posts, but politics aside, "we" are definitely better off without having experienced a collapse of the world credit markets and a deflationary depression, and I don't know a single intelligent person who thinks otherwise. Neither Bush nor Obama did, which is why they both moved quickly to backstop the collapse. Of course, that is not to say that I'm happy about what this has all come to. "We" face tough times and it won't be easy sailing ahead. I personally think it will get worse, but that's beside the point. |
Saw posted some place the other day that the number of Job openings almost doubled this month and the number of un-employed went up at the same time.
Sounds to me like a lot of people should be willing to work when they can rather than hold out for that rocket scientist job. |
