They should do that in the USA for misdemeanors and make prison a really harsh place for felonies.
seriously, get people to stop acting like morons because they think going to jail is cool. beat the fuck out of them and have tax payer money go to something more useful
we would have a lot less repeat offenders if they did that here!
no shit!!
"Miss Jones remembers the trauma reported by one man who came to Amnesty International after several strokes of the cane: 'he was shivering and perspiring with fear just before... and then during the caning, he remembers how it felt... it was like a tearing across his buttocks... he talked about how he screamed like a mad animal and how basically, it leaves festering and huge scars on his derriere... it swelled to twice its size and he was not able for weeks and weeks to wear clothing. The tremendous bruising black and blue of thighs. And he says to this day he still has nightmares about it. This happened when he was seventeen. He's now over 40. This isn't just a little spanking. This is truly traumatic. It may be easy for people to say "oh, this is simply a little pain and it'll go away". If one has undergone it, I think one can really understand the cruelty of it'."
"Every stroke was a stroke of hell, which I will never forget as long as I live."
the idea of it sounds perfect.. punish people for their crimes right? The problem is the punishment doesn't normally suit the crime as it is a PERMANENT injury and not to mention a serious psychological one. If they gave them mandatory community service (something they can't choose, something they would hate but needs to get done) they would learn the same lesson and not be scarred for it... Surely there can be a compromise between what we do in North America and what they do there anyway.

In the english navy, you could get 500 strokes. You were hit til you passed out, revived the next day, beaten again, until you died or 500. Anyone left alive went "mad" probably from pain and trauma. People who survived 100 had their shoulder bones showing through their skin.
Many times, you'd get 50 for refusing to be sodomized by a superior officer, and this is after you were gang pressed and forced into the service against your will.
Each man was issued a pint of rum a day and small beer, so people got through this by staying drunk for 20 years.

i'm sure there were cases of this but if shit was that rough mutiny's would be a twice a day event... you can't command troops that want you dead.... morale is a must...

This is in the 1800s BTW - and if you have a marine pointing gun at your head you don't mutiny.
