                                                      I'm sure he recognized the risk involved but elected to roll the dice anyway given the huge potential payoff in both monetary riches and worldwide political clout.

                                                      What he didn't bank on was a domestic insurrection occuring in the meantime which provided the West with a ready excuse to intervene.

                                                      Having said this, the West really had no other choice, in any event, given the immense damage Gadaffi's plan would have wreaked on their collective economies.
