It needs to be on screen and preferably above the fold.

Depends on the shoot. Natural daylight has a look to it that cant be beat buy any studio lighting, but you cant shoot with big windows if the story of the scene requires a classroom, jail set, Dr. set, etc.

I say that it depends on what you are shooting.
