It depends where the banner is on the page, what kind of traffic you are getting, what kind of site the banner is on ie: are people wanting to click away at something more attractive or does the banner actually do it's job if it's a good design ?

300x250 next to video on a tube with the right banner should be able to do 1.8 - 2.0

another thing - conversions. The banner might get clicks but may convert poorly. I have banners with .10 ctr that convert at 3-4% and banners at .66% ctr that convert one out of 100-200 clickers

Depends on how the banner is designed. If you have a shit designer that doesn't have a clue about traffic then you will get a shit CTR.

For instance, if I do a banner with my hottest piece of content, I can get about 3-4% ctr, if I throw on that same banner Get Your $1.00 2 Day Trial then the ctr drops to about 1% because people know from the get go they have to pay.

We do a lot of A B testing with all different kinds of stuff to find out what works for us. We have a very good idea now and we stick to that strategy. I would highly recommend really looking at the sites you are advertising on, what you competition does and cater to that specific sites surfers. Very rarely do we throw a banner on more than 1 or 2 sites, we like to be specific to the audience if possible.

amazing how many webmasters in adult would throw a banner up and then complain about not converting or not getting clicks. Or just send it to 1 tour.
