Seriously, what is mentally wrong with the people running the Rock&Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland?

The number of incredible classic rock acts I'm finding that AREN'T in the HOF is becoming staggering. And all the while performers like Madonna and ABBA are getting in. Really, Madonna? I thought this was the ROCK hall of fame. The pop & dance hall of Lame is that way -------->

Here's just a sampling of classic rock acts that are NOT in the so-called Rock hall of fame:

Kiss -- NOT in the HOF.
Deep Purple -- Not in, come ON people.
Rush -- Not in
Doobie Brothers -- Not in
The Guess Who -- Not in!
Chicago -- Not in
Emerson, Lake and Palmer
The Moody Blues
King Crimson
Styx
Peter Frampton
Heart
Foreigner
Journey
Bad Company
Three Dog Night
Alice Cooper
Moody Blues
E.L.O.
Def Lepard
Cheap Trick
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Joe Cocker
Supertramp
Judas Priest
George Thorogood & the Destroyers

All of the above hold a piece of rock history, all of them were through-the-roof HUGE back in the day and their stuff still sells and gets a lot of airplay today on classic rock stations all over the world. Every one of these bands as well as dozens of others all have incredible biographies and discographies, every one. All are more than accomplished enough to warrant hall of fame induction.

Instead we put the likes of Madonna, ABBA,
The Staple Singers?? Who the hell are they?
Bonnie Raitt? Since when is Bonnie Raitt ROCK?
Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five? Give me a fucking break. I googled them, they were together for all of 5 years back in the 80's and are a RAP group, doesn't rap-crap have it's own hall of fame?

So I'll ask again, WTF is braindeadWRONG with the people in Cleveland running the Rock hall of fame?

Wait, when I was young I may have been clueless about a lot of things but I knew my rock history even back then.

Three Dog Night were huge in the early 70's. Huge. To me a HOF should be about who was the best of the best of their time, whose work was influential, and who helped shape and epitomizes what classic rock IS.

And the last criteria is that they actually BE rockers.

You're right, he was inducted just this year. Along with someone called "Dr John". Had to google him, he's a jazz musician. Jazz!

I agree with some of those bands deserving in but Three Dog Night no. It's not really the Rock Hall of Fame, it's a popular music hall of fame. Madonna does deserve in, Staple Singers got in because they're black and gospel, rock and roll people always want to pay respect to the brothers who invented the genre.

Halls of Fame should be for the elite, those who were trend setters or one of the top few selling artists for a sustained period of time or unanimous critical acclaim.

When I was a tweener and into my teens Supertramp was huge, I think they were bigger in Canada than anywhere. That's why I'd consider putting them in, for a few years they had to be in the top 3 selling bands. Their music doesn't hold up great, some of it's kind of embarassing.

Frampton for a couple of years was like Elvis or Michael Jackson.

The thing with those 70's bands like Foreigner, Styx, Journey, ELO etc - music wasn't fragmented into 50 different genres, top 40 radio on the AM dial still was a big thing, FM rock stations were coming into their own and you had a huge population bubble of late Baby Boomers - a couple top 40 hits and you were huge, multi million copies of each album, selling out stadiums. I wouldn't put any of them in, if you put them in I can think of another half dozen that are similar. And a Hall of Fame should be for the elite, not the very good.

Mate, i know my rock history and i've heard and seen many bands that you wouldn't have a clue about but Three Dog Night? They may have been huge, but where? certainally not over here.
And while we are on the subject, what makes a HOF band? if its a band that had success world wide then KISS wouldn't make this list, they may have been huge in the US but over here at least, they were nothing more than a mild novelty band.

Mutt it's my opinion that you are way off on most of your "no's". You shouldn't deny a band's entry into the HOF simply because you personally don't like them or their stuff. Nothing more to say on your post but you do have the right to state your opinion.

Rogueteens - If you knew your rock history you'd know who Three Dog Night were.

And the R&R HOF IS after all in N America, specifically the US, it's certainly going to give some weight to bands who were massive over here even if they weren't all that huge in jolly olde England.

I'm not suggesting every single band/artist I've mentioned should be in the HOF. I'm merely pointing out all the great acts of the 60's, 70's and 80's that aren't in there as opposed to some of the more ridiculous ones who are.

I pretty much agree with you 100%, Mutt. And someone mentioned that Jethro Tull aren't in the HOF. There's a reason for that--they were awful. For one thing, what kind of rock band has a flute as a lead instrument???

Look, if a band's eligebility into the HOF rested on everyone's individual tastes there would be NO bands in there at all. For every band you can name there's going to be some self-proclaimed expert out there who thinks his opinion should hold sway over everyone else's who'll say that band doesn't deserve inclusion because "they suck".

Fact is I'm not a balls-on diehard fan of every act I named either, but I do possess the wherewithal to at least acknowldege their place in rock history and the role each one played. "Maybe" to Rush? Please. This is a band that is 3rd in the world (behind the Beatles and the Stones) for the most gold and platinum albums. (something like 23 and 14, respectively). Yet mutt is giving them a "maybe".... yeah, sure guys.

They will only admit "classic" (meaning old) to get more aged visitors through their doors or anyone who can sell tickets (like Madonna). This place was never about the music. I love Rock and Metal but this would be the last place I would ever visit.

I have a friend who shoots and edits videos for them. Its all about money. If that act cant sell tix and or wont perform there for a deal, they don't get inducted. Its that lame and that simple.

If some of the great classic rock acts listed in this thread were to be included I actually just might be more inclined to visit it. But absolutely as it now stands, no way. It certainly doesn't represent the best-of-the-best of the rock music *I* grew up with. No point in going there until that changes.
