Donnie was a good guy. We have all had our rough spots in life, some more than others. He was bettering himself and getting his life back on track. Though it doesn't make up for his wrongs, he has lost his life, so it would be great to not focus so much on his rough times and show a little respect.
At the end of the day he had come to terms with his wrongs, admitted them, and was trying to make up for them. IMO it takes a lot for someone to do that.

It's amazing how many talented people prep for their own demise. He was struggling with a drug addiction (gathered from his past post) and it looks like the addiction won.
