Ladies of GFY, Cameras inside fitting rooms?!?

Today I went to a major department store. I was trying on several spanx pieces because the SA insisted I try them before I leave. Mind you I'm a size 12, so I really hate to try things in the store but she was so insisting that I just had to try them.

After I was finished I looked up and saw a camera hovering over outside of my fitting room, but facing the mirror (The door didn't hit the ceiling). As I mentioned I don't really try things on, but I would find it quite disturbing if there were someone looking at the other end. Is this legal? If it is, I will just buy and take home and return, I understand it's to prevent shoplifting but this is very private.

I would think that you have a "reasonable expectation of privacy" in a fitting room.

So my guess is no, not legal.

Actually I was all set to shoot a great vid at a lovely west edmonton lingerie boutique trying on different outfits. The owner was so cool with "industry chicks" and gave 10% off. She would have let me do changeroom shoots. And biggest ever selection I have seen in a dancewear/ lingerie shop.

I used to work for SabreWatch, Excalibur & Burns security companies & can astoundedly state that a changing room is there for your privacy. You can sue those mothers.... Enjoy trying on clothes before purchasing them. It is the stores security to watch what is taken in & out of the dressing room & not watch inside the room!

I am still traumatized! ... That is...disgusted. And to think, underage children try things on too. How is taping or viewing them nude not illegal?! I don't care why they're watching. That's just plain wrong.

I do have a problem with being watched, but I have a bigger problem with being taped. I am creeped out knowing I could be naked on some stores security tapes. I also wonder what security does with these tapes. How are they disposed of when no longer needed, etc.

I find the taping to be a major invasion of privacy and will now purchase my stuff and take it home to try on.

It's not legal, and since the camera was outside the fitting room it may not have been peering into the rooms themselves.

If it's a major department store usually they have checks and balances in place to prevent them from being sued. You can never be sure that someone's not being a dirty bird, but it makes it less likely than if you were at a local boutique.

Next time I would suggest standing in the fitting room and seeing if you can see the camera from the mirror. For the most part if you can't see the camera in the mirror the camera can't see you.

The reason they have cameras facing outside the dressing room stalls is because they need to see how many items you go in w/ and how many items you come out with before you hit the racks to dump off your unwanted items and exit the area.

If you are getting fully nude in a dressing room wouldn't that mean you are putting something on that requires you to be nude? I thought trying lingerie (panties) was a big no no.

Btw, what type of spanx products as that would likely weigh in on if camera was illegal or not?
