it will probably be a couple more years before you can just buy from from a registrar, at least. there will be 2 sunrise periods and then the landrush and then they will be sold at registrars but i'm betting a couple years before even the first sunrise period, and it will be close to a year after the first sunrise period that just anyone can register them.

a sunrise period is where you have to have certain credentials to secure a domain

The first period would allow owners of porn-related trademarks to claim their .xxx domain names and use them as normal, ICM representatives said here at ICANN’s public meeting in Cartagena, Colombia.

But the second would enable non-porn companies that don’t want their brands associated with adult material to basically “turn off” their trademarks in .xxx domains, paying a one-time fee.

Disney, for example, would be able to make sure that disney.xxx is permanently blocked from registration. The domain would not resolve, not even to forward to disney.com, and the company wouldn’t have to pay recurring annual registration fees.

It does not appear that ICM’s plans would prevent cybersquatters registering domains such as disneyporn.xxx, but high .xxx registration fees will likely make this less of a problem for trademark holders.

The third proposed sunrise would allow owners of non-trademarked porn domains in other TLDs, such as .com, to get their equivalent .xxx using an automated Whois check.

The process is being handled by Valideus, a British IP consultancy.

don't forget, ICANN is allowing .anything now and applications are being submitted for everything from .porn to .gay to .blog. you'll see these pop up in a few years or so. lawley really wanted to beat these others tld's to the punch but its really anti clamatic since for 70k or so, someone could buy their own .whatever.

LOL stuart said in an interview a couple weeks ago "by June" (this year) you can start buying. He isn't going to wait year(s) for people to decide if they want the .xxx equivalent of their .com. No way with that guy. If that whole sunrise thing is even legit, you going to get a small period of time then anyone can register it. You think after waiting 10 years to pass this is going to wait 1-2 more years to be able to sell the domains. Anything worth registering for .xxx already has a .com that is in use.

what would that accomplish? You still going to end up with the domain, have to pay yearly registration fees, oh and you just wasted a bunch of money on attorney's fees to accomplish the same thing at the end of the day (owning the domain).

all new tld's have to go through at least one sunrise period and I don't believe he gets to choose how long they last.
