"US government officials told the NY Times that sailors and other military personnel onboard were exposed to a month's worth of radiation in an hour's time. They added that US helicopters flying humanitarian missions some 60 miles north of damaged Japanese reactors were coated with particulate radiation. The aircraft were washed off."

    BUT:

"officials said there was no indication that any of the military personnel experienced ill effects from the exposure, comparing it to "natural background radiation" that all people are exposed to daily."

people at sea level are exposed to ~12mrems of background radiation per month. A single cross-country flight will expose you to ~5mrems of radiation. Make the flight back and you've pretty much exposed yourself to a months normal radiation dose in just a few hours.

Of course, you don't worry for pilots or flight stewards/stewardesses though

one of them?? personal advice - stop getting married and instead date for at least 8 years before doing so... Once you pass that 7-year itch, you're both married couple material

but again, pilots or flight stewards/stewardesses aren't trying to tell me their nuclear reactor 'might be having a meltdown' and there isn't 'much to worry about'

that's because you equate a nuclear meltdown to a catastrophic explosive event

more people who don't understand what a non event this is. The radiation released will not kill, make anyone sick or decrease penis size. Research some shit, the radiation released was cesium and iodine. Not directly from the uranium rods but a bi-product from the cooling system.

Big solar flares create more radiation...

It's not about people getting sick and such.... it's about our food supply and parts of our water supplies not being usable until cycled out and then being able to get people food who need it but can't get it, because we're out of it, then replacing it too...

Food and water contamination does happen and it has happened in the past.

who do you mean by "our"? Agriculture only accounts for a fraction of Japanese GDP, and I don't think they export much foodstuffs at all. From what I understand, it very unrealsitic to expect a chernobyl-style gas cloud wafting over to the US, so your fodd supply won't be in any danger. If anything, local land around the site may get contaminated, but that's about it, right?

"they" probably already contaminate "your" food supply with the amount of heavy metals in their electronics you buy and discard ;)
