[3:08 a.m. ET, 5:08 p.m. Tokyo] An explosion has been reported near a nuclear plant in northeastern Japan's Fukushima prefecture, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported, citing the country's nuclear and industrial safety agency.
One expert said the explosion was "clearly a serious situation," but may not be related to problems inside the plant's nuclear reactor.
Other effects of the tsunami may have caused the blast, said Malcolm Grimston, associate fellow for energy, environment and development at London's Chatham House.
"It's clearly a serious situation, but that in itself does not necessarily mean major (nuclear) contamination," he said.

Have a japanese person at my work now, he is saying that if it is a true meltdown, it will eventually hit the water table causing a massive nuclear bomb style blast.
So much for that "clean, safe power" theory. BBC trying to play it down, and failing.
When I was young and protesting at Diablo Canyon, this is exactly the scenario we were trying to illustrate. There is no such thing as a "fail safe" sytem with that kind of energy.

Yes. There's radiation seeping into your body, and mutating your cells as you read this. You're going to have 16 fingers, and an 80lbs foot soon.

I wonder what all the pro-nuclear politicians in the US think about building more reactors now?
This is a disaster of course, but in reality nuclear power is much safer than just about all other forms of energy. Oil pollutes much more, and kills tens of thousands of people every year. There have been very few deaths due to nuclear power.

yeah, only about 200,000 who died from cancer and other radiation related diseases over the last 25 years in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Not counting the children that died during pregnancy or were born with deformations. and not counting the other 200,000 who are still sick and need regular treatment.

Let's hope you'll still be saying that a few months from now.
