    The dangers of Ad retargeting

There's a thin line between retargeting and stalking. Check it out at http://www.askshane.org/traffic-gene...e-stalking.php

I?m a big fan of companies knowing general information about me so that I can see better ads as I browse the web. I?m going to see ads anyway, might as well be ones that are interesting.

I?m also fine with retargeting, the strategy of serving me ads based on a site I?ve been to but chose to leave without making a purchase. Offline stores would love to be able to do that.

However, let?s imagine a scenario where an offline store had a sales rep follow you out of the store and start showing up everywhere you went. Starbucks, the grocery store, the driving range, church ? you name it, there he was. Always.

It wouldn?t take long for you to get pretty freaked out.

no i won't - i can proudly say i've never clicked on a mainstream online ad in the 14 years i've been online, they can suck the thoughts out of my brain with some futuristic thought sucker and know exactly what I need or want to buy and i'm still not clicking on a banner or text ad. i know where to find what I want.
I moved my sites to Vacares Hosting. I've saved money, my hair is thicker, lost some weight too! Thanks Sly!

i click on just about every ad i see, text or banner. it helps me build my sites and see what the competition is doing. i will study peoples landing pages all day. a lot of times the major brands pump out millions into testing and do the work for you.

I have the same strategy, although not all day long.

EXACTLY. I am an ad clicking fucking maniac these days. Anything remotely interesting. I want to see what others are pushing and how they are doing it. Especially ads I see REPEATEDLY. It means they are PROFITABLE.

Well i over embellished a bit

but casual surfing i am always looking at ads. especially since media buy traffic is cheaper than standard search PPC most of the time.

That's its key weakness right there. Unfortunately, the fix might run afoul of the new DO NOT TRACK legislation/regulation currently in the works in the US
