Obamas plan for solving the budget deficit: sell US citizenship for $500k a pop

The city of Dallas, through its City of Dallas Regional Center and United States Citizenship and Immigration Services EB-5 program, sells permanent residence green cards to individual foreign ?investors? and their families.

For the low, low price of $500,000, someone from most anywhere else can purchase the right to call himself or herself a U.S. resident, presumably foregoing the usual naturalization and citizenship process. The investment buys the investor, spouse, and unmarried children younger than 21 each a green card.

The city takes the money, funnels it into the CDRC EB-5 program, and creates 10 jobs per investment ? somehow, somewhere, in some business.

According to city information, 43 people paid their way into the queue and could receive green cards by March 31, undoubtedly after intensive background and security checks.

The investors, according to the city, hail from Mexico, China, and Nigeria, and the city probably got shorted there because most of us receive Nigerian offers for way more than a half-million dollar

Buying citizenship is not a bad idea. Renting it would be even better. Say some slob shows up and pays $1000 a year to reside in the US. Or you can pay $500k and come and go as you please. I think this is an awesome fucking idea.

Right, its a much better idea to educate foreign students and help them get doctoral degrees in our country before we force them to leave and take their 'worthless brains and education' back to their country of origin to build our competition...

Bloomberg has the right idea. Every graduate of a US graduate school should be given a 10 year work visa. It would definitely help our nation overcome the brain drain it currently faces. Exporting marketable education is a horrible long term economic decision.

In Orlando, they turned some empty time share building into "investment/jobs" properties that you can buy for $500k, and with the high maintenance fees you pay, you somewhat satisfy the 10 jobs rule.

Yeah that's true, but in order for that to happen, it takes 2 years and the EB5 permanent resident needs to prove the business/investment is still operational and that at least 10 new jobs were created (not including fellow family members).

hmm ... in the past you could invest large sums of money ( not exact sure how much ) that would create jobs in the US .. and the investment would be yours still .. so in the end if you invested wisely you could actually still make money of it

but this deal if explained correctly seems different .. . you actually lose your entire 500K to the gov who then invests it to create jobs ??

We were looking into this with an immigration lawyer a couple of weeks ago... Theoretically it's an investment into a distressed area, and you are supposed to get the principal back with interest in a few years.

I could be wrong but I think it's been like this for quite a long time. Most countries have something like this as well. I don't really see why it would be a bad thing. I'm sure you would get a few bad apples but there should be an easy way to sort them out.

Machete, Sologirlcontent is correct. The investor visa program has been available for a very long time. And ... I rather have someone with that kind of $$$ to come in here, as they are less likely to use public benefit/welfare resources.
