Attn: Windows Server administrators...

I'm from a unix background myself...

but could you list the most commonly used windows applications for:

Mail Servers - SMTP/POP/IMAP
FTP Servers
Name Servers/DNS
Webservers - Apache for win32, IIS -- anything else?

How do remote windows administrators make secure connections to their boxes? SSH? If so, what are the common/standard SSH implementations for windows?

Any other common auth/remote administration methods or software?

Thanks

Mail:Mercury Mail is free, and it works.
FTP: WarFTP
DNS is built into Windows
Webserver: Apache
Remote admin via VNC or Terminal Services, take your pick.

Plenty of other server applications at Stroud's serverwatch .

Use IIS like all the other M$ junkies, just be sure to update your server once a day.

Last time i checked SSH isnt implemented on a Windoze machine, however, you might be able to implement an SSL connection over Terminal Server/Services. PC Anywhere also supports encryption aswell.

PC Anywhere, I am not sure if VNC is encrypted yet or not.

Aw it's just one of my many hats

The SE stuff requires a bit of unix/scripting know how of course.. but we won't get into that anymore.

I'm curious about the windows server world for this new project we're working on. Should be pretty good... but windows is so far off in it's own world were probably going to have to seperate things for windows users. No big deal I guess.

But thanks for the other info

A few suggestions

Imail www.ipswitch.com is an excellent mail solution

Do NOT use IIS use anything else, Microsoft cannot keep up with the people hacking and using IIS for virus distribution.

WarFTP is a good FTP solution

Upgrade to Linux as soon as you can because Windows is a lousy server platform.
