Type-in vs searches
Do you think people search first and type-in later or the other way around? I'm thinking of registering a few domains that have potntial for type-in traffic, but the only way I know to check a word's popularity is through search engine and keyword tools.
Do you suppose 100 searches/day translates into a type-in or two per day? More? Less? Is one even remotely related to the other? SpaceAce |

If you want free typein names the easiest to find are misspells.
The Overture tool is pretty clunky these days, but if you check the names WITH the .com included its a pretty good indicator whether they get typeins or not. Three word names rarely get many typins. Want a sample? Heres on that seems to be available that will get 20-40 typins a a day: switchbored.com [http://inventory.overture.com/d/sear....com&x=14&y=14

What kind of conversion would you expect from someone looking for switchboard.com and say they sell switch boards and then the poor speller that comes. I think grabbing mispelled adult domains make better sense.

Yep. Im sure that name will get at least 20 typins a day. A good tool to find them is http://www.findgoodnames.com/
This will find you more good names in 30 minutes than you will in a week searching by hand.

Well I dont give away the good ones, Im just showing the guy how to look for them. Also, many people make a very good living buying 100's or 1000's of names like that and just sending the traffic to PPC's. You'd be surprised how much you can make on them. Also, the best money names are NOT adult. Few adult terms get bid over 25 cents on Overture. Many mainstrean terms get far more than that. Just check travel terms, domains, hosting etc. "online casinos" was $24.00 a click last time I looked.

I own many highend domains including spanish.com and dollars.com. I've found that over all my type-in traffic has been going down every month. My theory is that more and more people are learning how to use search engines and the like. There are less and less newbies on the Internet every day. And those are the ones who just type domains in the address field of their browser.

oldtimer, I know the last thing you need is whippersnappers like me horning on your business, but you've been really nice about answering my questions and I like to learn. If you've got a minute (and ICQ), please add me to your list. UIN 8106140 I'd like to ask you one or two things. Thanks, SpaceAce |

Misspells are a little different. They are tied directly to how popular the properly spelled site is doing. For example I own consomptionjunction.com, and traffic is going up every month :0) If you want it I'll give it to you. Only gets 40-50/day.

oldtimer,
What do you consider to be enough typeins to make a domain worthwhile? I just ran my newest program and came up with a bunch of domains between 30 - 100 on the Overture search (judging by what you said earlier, I guess that might mean 15-50 typeins/day). I also discovered that several of the domains I already own seem to get searches on Overture. Do you think I would be wasting my time to pick up domains showing 50-75 searches at Overture? Is there a better public tool for that purpose? I had a look at findgoodnames but I am in Linux and haven't installed it. Does it do anything of the sort? I appreciate the answers you've already given me. SpaceAce |

I sent the ICQ auth, is that the right number you posted? Theres lots of names with Overture numbers, but you have to be carfeul. The tool isnt as acurate as it used to be and a lot of names that show big numbers wont get typeins. Just use it as a guide. The best thing is common sense. If it LOOKS like a name or a mispell that people would type, AND it gets numbers on Overture, theres a good chance it will get traffic. As for how many searches Overture shows for it to be worth buying, it depends on the name. Even more important than how many searches, is how targeted the name is. I would grab a good gambling or travel name if it showed anything on Overture. If a name looks really good to me I will take it whether Overture showed anything or not. I dont buy misspells anymore BTW, I just suggested them because their easier to find if your just starting out with typeins. (Stay away from famous brand names BTW) Just to show you how haywire the Overture tool is right now, ConsumptionJunction.com gets thousands of typeins, but on Overture it shows 0. Use your common sense as your main guide. Once you've been at it for awhile, you develop a knack for spotting good names. http://inventory.overture.com/d/sear...n.com&x=13&y=9
