WheresGeorge.com currency tracker survey

What an interesting concept.

As change from a store, I received a $1 today that had something stamped on it. It read " Currency Tracker Survey. Please report sightings to www.wheresgeorge.com.

Seems someone has stamped a mess of $1 and $5 bills and entered them into a database. You enter the serial number and issue year and it logs it and tells you where else it was reported at. Then after you use it, if someone else enters it into their database, it'll tell you. They already have over 1.6mil registered users who have entered over 26million bills.

What an idea.. deface a bunch of money.. put up a website and a database... have tons of people visit it because of the money they received and then sell ads for the site and in tracking emails.

Wonder if I should go get my www.persiankitty.com stamp made.

I searched on GFY to see if it had been mentioned before. Didn't find anything, that's why I posted. But searching it differently now, I can see it has been.

Oh well... I thought it was interesting.

Wow, that's still around. Got one of those 3 years ago. Great concept.

Its illegal to place advertising on money though and I'm surprised the Treasury Dept. hasn't paid them a visit.

Imagine if Wal-Mart started stamping every dollar bill they handle every day with their logo. Gazooks the whole currency base would be zapped.

I had some kids write site URL's in huge dugout sand letters on the beach once and just watched as all the people walking by would read them and start laughing. Funny thing was no one erased them with their feet.

I cam across a few bills stamped with the WheresGeorge ad years ago. I thought it was a cool idea and registered for the site but my marked bills have never gotten another hit.

As for putting porn ads on dollar bills, I believe you will hear from the Treasury Dept. I read an article that the WheresGeorge people got a visit from the Secret Service and were warned to discontinue stamping the bills.

defacing money is *illegal* ...

the reason why wheresgeorge gets away with it is because the initiative is amateurish and therefore generates sympathy...

what do you think will happen when you stamp www.hairymidgetgangbangs.com on them? yes, indeed - since there's no way you can own that domain plus remain anonymous they'll come and honor you with a visit... and i've got the feeling that the sympathy you generate with them won't be enough

Actually from what I found it appears defacing only refers to if the item is unfit to be used after you did something to it. A small stamp or a phone number, etc.. must not be defacing because a bank would yank it out of circulation.

From the US Treasury website..

"Defacement of Currency

Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. Under this provision, currency defacement is generally defined as follows: Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined not more than $100 or imprisoned not more than six months, or both."

im sure they would consider a porn ad "unfit to use" for children etc.....nothing like grandma handing 5yo tommy a 5 dolla bill with "Boobs4fuck.com" on it

Why not steal a whole bunch of credit cards, stamp them quickly, and return them! ;)

Hey PK, do you know if that started in Washinton State?

I heard that it began here, but I have no idea where it really started.

From what I can tell I think it's Massachusetts.
