Impact of .xxx on value of domain names

Is it still worth investing in domain names? Does anyone have clear knowledge of what the ultimate goal of the .xxx tld is as far as the government is concerned?

Seems to me it could go either way.

adult domains could be blacklisted that don't have the .xxx (on the grounds that .xxx are easily filtered to prevent children accessing them).

In which case adult.com's are going to be massively reduced in value.

Or else the .xxx could be blacklisted and filtered without any impact on other adult domains.

In which case adult.com won't be affected and might even increase in value.

Looking at recent domain sales, although prices have dropped, that can be put down to the recession and general reduction in profits. I mean, I presume whoever bought sex.com did their research, unless they are planning on bidding $33 million for sex.xxx ?

The entire .XXX tld will be censored and blocked a lot faster than any .COM names get censored.

If you were planning on buying any .XXX names of any particular value you missed the boat at this stage in the game. Maybe a bro will sell you some of the ones they were promised behind closed doors.

thanks for the advice.

The only real danger I can see is if the Government (US) makes it mandatory for adult sites to have the .xxx There are no official plans in the works for that are there? I mean that would be huge, much bigger than 2257. Surely they couldn't get away with it?

I'm not planning on buying any .xxx names, just considering making an $x,xxx bid for a particular .com I want. Just want to be sure I'm not pissing my money against the wall.

The "real danger" for adult names is the adult industry itself (ie, piracy, lack of profitability, lack of conversions, lack of monetization etc).

The other bullshit with .xxx will take years to pan out, if it actually does happen.

United States Senators Max Baucus (D., Montana) and Mark Pryor (D., Arkansas) have already proposed to make it mandatory...

A revival of the Bacus Bill of a few years ago I suppose.

A legislation of commercial free speech ? the Courts just might uphold it ...

A conditional limitation of commercial speech ? not an outright prohibition.

Time will tell ...

The ultimate goal of .xxx is to get it approved and the get the governments of the world (primarily the US) to force anyone with a porn site to use a .xxx tld. This will force people to come to them for the domains and they would make a killing

There is no guarantee that .xxx will get approved and if it does I can't see any way a law could be passed that would survive court challenges and make .xxx mandatory. It wasn't too long ago that the supreme court ruled that forcing sites to have age verification was illegal because existing filtering software did the same job and did it less evasively. Filtering has only gotten better so I can't imagine the supreme court would suddenly think it is okay to create an online ghetto and force all domains to the .xxx.

This doesn't even begin to mention the cluster fuck forcing all sites to a .xxx would cause. would it be the .com owner, the .net or someone else who gets the .xxx version of the name? I would imagine there would be plenty of court cases. It would be a mess.

My prediction is that .xxx will eventually one day be approved and it will just be another novelty extension like .info or .mobi

Domains are useless really without traffic unless it is extremely specific to what you are promoting and even then a quick creative mind can godaddy anything and come up with something just as good.

the more shitty new extensions they come up with, the more will aged .com's be worth.

fuck the usa, they can't censor the whole world, there are registrars, billers, hosts etc enough out of usa.

if they do get away with it, I propose that we each get ONLY 1 domain and make subdomains for all our sites. It's not the ideal solution, but it will limit their profits.

There's no predicting what they would do. The only thing for sure is they can't do a very good job of censoring free speech and expression without .XXX

Like every other new TLD/sTLD it looks like there is a period for trademark holders before the landrush. If the com/net owner doesn't have a registered trademark despite running a successful site for a decade and a half on a .COM, they are SOL.

If your .COM has name recognition and type-in potential you can rest assured on a backroom bro owning it.
