    Freehosts soon to die?

Considering the current prices of (even) dedicated machines, and cheapest bandwidth prices ever, I am wondering if freehosts are still being used at all? Or is it mostly only used by new people who don't want to take the risk and buy bandwidth from a host?

I've yet to use a freehost. Everytime I try I get too frustrated.

I'm sure there are some people still using them but I really never saw the point in using a free host with a banner on the top and bottom of my page. That's just crazy.
I've trusted my sites to them for over a decade...

      Webair, bitches.

Not only the header/footer pain-in-the-ass, but honestly, what TGPs still admit freehosted galleries? It's not like there isn't enough paying submitters out there...

Well, if they give free content... more free traffic... less ads.... might be good for starters... getting listed on link-o-rama etc....

(btw, not related but how much traffic/day can you expect from the link-o-rama.com directory? )

Yeah but you obviously have at least half a brain and a bit of a clue.

Unfortunately for this industry there still are people using free hosts - in fact there are some boards where if it ain't free they don't want to know about it.

The Hun - every newbie's aspiration is to get a gallery listed on The Hun but most of them aren't prepared to put their money where their mouth is so they use free hosts.

I thought freehosts were supposed to die like 3 years ago. That's what all the predictions said anyway.

                      touche dude

The fact that FreeHosts are still there inspite of all prediction means something. Among other things it means that they are evolving.. I personally know that the margins are narrowing but if we take what Equinox said in the first post - prices of BW and other stuff are dropping so its also cheaper to run FreeHosts - especially of its a big one and can bargain prices down.
It is said that having your own server makes more money - well, it is probably true but it requires initial "investment". Some people don't want to risk that.
But - I guess making money without spending any is smart enough.

lots of webmasters want anonymity, and they only get it with a freehost. most big TGPs accept specific freehosts and not others (as mark noted). i think most freehosts today offer more to the webmaster than just free hosting. its a viable business model if they make it one. those freehosts who's main business was general purpose freehost - are gone now.
<b>For sale: Country in Europe, French speaking. Will not accept Belgium as tender. Offers above $1 should be sent to [email protected]<b>

After the hosted pics/movies galleries trend by most sponsor, I see the same trend happening with freehost, already some of the big sponsors are offering free hosting without any kind of banner as long as you only push their program, and I have even seen one who allows you to push other program, as long as it's not more than 50%!
So, it might get harder for free host to survive. However, I think it will be better for the industry, since it will rid us of the amateurs who call themselves webmaster and give our industry a bad name.

Yes, freehosts are maybe going to die. Revsharehost's and sponsor's "free bannerfree hosts" is better solution for newbies, I think.
But, when I used freehosts, some of my freehosted galleries bringed me $100 or more, so it's possible to make some money on freehost.

You'd be surprised how many big paysite and tgp webmasters use freehosts for galleries.
