What are you looking for, and where are you?
Lawyers specialize, and usually firms do as well though to a lesser degree of course. A firm that is incredible at criminal law you may not want representing you for a civil case. Also, lawyers have to pass the bar exam for each state they practice in. There may be multiple offices in one state, maybe two, possibly three. There may be a few big firms with offices all over the country but none come to mind.

That's the top firm in the world. They either have the best lawyer in your area who specializes in whatever you need done... or they hire that lawyer for you and manage the case on your behalf. If price is any kind of concern, use someone else. |

Depending on your case, I was involved in a large Federal anti-trust lawsuit in the Washington DC area a few years back. We interviewed a half dozen firms and chose Shaw Pittman Potts & Trowbridge. Excellent firm, excellent results.

I used to work in law. The most reliable resource to find out information on a firm or lawyer:
http://www.martindale.com/ If you have a specific area of law you are looking into, you'd probably get a more concise answer with firms specializing in that area of law. |

Ed Shapiro in Beverly Hills is deceased now, his son Robert Shapiro was OJ Simpson's lead attorney in his murder trial ...
I hired Ed (his father) in a criminal matter for a friend in 1977 — Tony got a walk on 12 charges — now that is a slick lawyer ... Ed Shapiro was also licensed at the Bar of the US Supreme Court to argue cases ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_...o_%28lawyer%29 |

Totally depends on what you looking for. If you have a tech matter, I'd stick to the bay area heavy hitters. Lobbying and political clout, D.C. Firms. Old school or complex litigation-New York or Chicago. Also, if it is litigation, I'd focus on firms with a large presence in your venue (they'll know the judges).
Also, don't count out small boutique firms. Some of the best IP lawyers and class action lawyers run offices with less than 10 lawyers. Keep in mind that if you aren't spending high 6 figures plus a year on legal, you may have a "name firm" but in reality a third year associate is doing all the work. A name partner at an established firm is not doing your work (even if he signs the pleadings or memo) unless you spending big money. |
