    Best Emergency Heater Options?

With the upcoming ice storm here in the Northeast, there is a good chance many people will experience power outages.

It is too late for tonight, but I'm researching emergency heater options for the future.

This one looks like a winner, especially for the low price!

    23,000 BTU Portable Kerosene Heater

    Any thoughts, experience, suggestions?

Kerosene stinks when it burns, but it will be reliable
Carbon is not the problem, it makes up 0.041% of our atmosphere , 95% of that is from Volcanos and decomposing plants and stuff. So people in the US are responsible for 13% of the carbon in the atmosphere which 95% is not from Humans, like cars and trucks and stuff and they want to spend trillions to fix it while Solar Panel plants are powered by coal plants
      think about that

Any heat source that burns a fuel will also produce carbon monoxide.

Just keep that in mind and be careful. People have been heating their homes for hundreds of years by burning a fuel source (wood, oil, natural gas, propane etc) and overall not many have died from it except for the stupid ones. You simply need an exhaust for it and you'll be ok.

You could also get a small Honda generator that can easily run a small electric space heater. They get about 8 hours per gallon so it's pretty efficient.

If you don't mind your house smelling to high hell and a high probability you will die that heater is perfect.

Get a solar generator and electric heater.

Needless to say ... the generator goes outside with an extension cord into the room. No smell, very little to no noise, you can also run a small light or hot-plate. You can run it for days with some plastic cans or siphoning from your car.

And how well does a solar generator work during a storm ? Would it work better than the electric heater during a power outage ?

Thanks for all of the great advice!

The small generator is definitely a good idea, for multiple reasons.

The kerosene heater is still not a bad idea for the price, and its specific purpose.

I suppose, if I go with just the heater, I could also buy two of these. One to move the heat around, and a second one to blow carbon monoxide out of a slightly cracked window...

Kerosene heaters aren't a whole lot of fun. They are smelly, messy.. you have to soak the wick and when it's almost empty (you can't refill it while it's burning) you have to pick it up and take it outside because the stench is unreal.

Might want to re-fill it out there too so you don't get Kero all over your house.

Before I got a kerosene heater I would get this propane set-up. The heaters are 20-30 bucks and screw right onto the tank. Way less smell or fumes. They can heat like a mother too.

Another consideration is, which the safest fuel to store - propane, kerosene, or gasoline?

Likely none should be stored indoors....

Before you start putting bizarre alternate heat producing devices into your homes - check the fine print on your insurance.

Cheaper to buy more blankets, anyway.
