    Book rental service

was just thinking. my sister does -alot- of reading and spends like $1000 a year on just books alone. most of them she reads and never looks at again. is there any kind like... video rental store but for books ? would make things alot cheaper, plus once one person has read one the next person can get enjoyment of it . etc

There is a paperback exchange store near where I live where you can buy used paperbacks pretty cheap or trade in your used one's for store credit. For a while they had a rental service where you could rent the new version of a hardback book for a reasonable amount. The problem became their waiting list. If a hot new book came out they would have a 4-6 month wait before you could rent it. It ended up not working too well and after a year or so they gave it up.

If you had the customers and were willing to buy multiple copies of each book you might be able to make a little more money off of it though. It just seems like it would be rough though.

Google shopping and sort by price - you can usually find an amazon type site and buy the book you want. (This is often cheaper than ebay). Then sell them on ebay.

I think it sounds like a great place.

                    Somonme should set it up.

Say a big building full of books that people can go and borrow then take back.

                    Wow.

I even have a name for it. I think 'library' would be a cool name.

I was thinking what if you emply people to walk around and drive around to keep the local area safe. They could call themselves police. Just an idea.

Tell her to check out the Nook. My friends that have it say that you can now loan books to each other for like 7 days or something. She can get together with some friends with similar interests and then can agree to who buys what and then swap.

Libraries don't have all the new releases, and when they do have them you're dealing with a long waiting list to be able to check one out. Same issue applies to used book stores; they rarely have what you're looking for. If you're just looking for any book then you're good, but if you want something specific you pretty much have to buy new.

The ebook readers are moving toward the idea of being able to loan your ebooks to a friend, which I like. Aside from that, I think the best option is buying new and reselling on ebay or half.com when you're done reading, assuming the book is in demand.
