Internet ?Kill Switch? Legislation Back in Play

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/201...h-legislation/

Thoughts?

Quote:
Legislation granting the president internet-killing powers is to be re-introduced soon to a Senate committee, the proposal?s chief sponsor told Wired.com on Friday.

The resurgence of the so-called ?kill switch? legislation came the same day Egyptians faced an internet blackout designed to counter massive demonstrations in that country.

The bill, which has bipartisan support, is being floated by Sen. Susan Collins, the Republican ranking member on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The proposed legislation, which Collins said would not give the president the same power Egypt?s Hosni Mubarak is exercising to quell dissent, sailed through the Homeland Security Committee in December but expired with the new Congress weeks later.

The bill is designed to protect against ?significant? cyber threats before they cause damage, Collins said.

?My legislation would provide a mechanism for the government to work with the private sector in the event of a true cyber emergency,? Collins said in an e-mail Friday. ?It would give our nation the best tools available to swiftly respond to a significant threat.?

The timing of when the legislation would be re-introduced was not immediately clear, as kinks to it are being worked out.

If America reaches a point of such civil unrest that the government needs to shut down the internet, you are going to have much bigger issues than not being able to update your twitter feed with: "OMG. House ransacked. Wife gang raped. Food stolen. WTF"

If that happens, I would rather have a working firearm than a working smartphone, just saying.

It's a war of information, if the people are trying to overthrow the bankers/EU/UN etc then we are the enemy. The bankers control the mainstream media but they do not control the Internet, hence they need an Internet kill switch to help them win any potential war against the people

That ability is probably already in place regardless. It was probably implemented before the internet. These measure of control will always be there no matter if the public knows about it or not.

In the event that they would use such a tactic... what could we do about it anyway?

When you attempt to shut down the media you only polarise your own people against you.

True enough...

But then they would not want that... They would rather Control the media (which is exactly what they do). A perfect example is war statistics... I personally know a marine who said his squad lost 22 guys one night. The next day the media reported only 2 dead.

Not sure I like them to just shut the whole thing down with the flip of a switch. Something just seems wrong about that.

Socialists expect the government to pay their way.

The internet is primarily privately run, it is no way a socialist issue.

It is my right to pay for something, and expect it to work, not a socialist issue.

I don't understand these posts.

If some enemy country, or organized group, starts causing major shit over the internet (ie takes control of our military computers, nuclear plants, banking system, etc.) we may very well need to shut shit down briefly, to sort stuff out, for our own good. Granted, it is an extreme move, but if this safeguard mechanism is sensible, and restricted only for huge and verified worst-case scenarios, why all the paranoia?

Why is everyone acting like Bush just passed a multi-hundred page patriotic act of some sort, that was instantly approved, even though almost none of our elected officials bothered to read it before signing it?

Go figure...

"For our own good" I think the German people in the Weimar Republic heard that before the shit hit the fan...
