    Man fired for wearing Packers tie

    CHICAGO ? John Stone never imagined he could be fired for wearing a necktie, but that's what happened to him on Monday

    The 34-year-old father of two was fired from his job as a car salesman at a suburban Chicago car dealership for wearing a Green Bay Packers tie.

    When WGNTV approached Stone's manager at Webb Chevrolet in Oak Lawn, he admitted that yes, they fired Stone for wearing the tie.

    General Manager Jerry Roberts said he told Stone to take it off or they'd fire him. Stone refused.

    Stone's 91-year-old grandmother, a huge Packers fan, too, died a couple of weeks ago and he says he was wearing the tie for her

              no it's not discrimination and if they're an at will employer it doesn't matter. it was most likely against their company policy and he refused to comply.

                                  Buy a suit from Sears, then go sale suits at Macy's. If you get fired from Macy's
                                  for wearing the Sears suit to work, you'd probably have a strong case since
                                  Macy's is not even supplying your wardrobe for purposes of employment.

                                  The car dealer ship had no policy regarding ties except requiring employees to
                                  buy one and wear it. Maybe the manger would have hated paisleys also.

                                  Ordering an employee to disrobe a garment that actually fully meets company policy
                                  may not even be a legal request the should be obeyed.

                                                          Unless this sales man had some sort of tenure agreement (highly unlikley) then he has no case against the car dealership. They can fire employees for any reason, as long as the reason is not an illegal reason. Illegal reasons would be firing based upon race, sex, religion etc. Firing based upon attire or being a fan of a certain team is not an illegal reason...though it might be dumb.

                                                          Furthermore, a Chicago car dealership has an argument that an employee wearing a Green Bay Packers neck tie can negatively affect sales since most potential buyers would probably be Chicago area residents...and thus they have a right to fire him for refusing to remove the tie.

                                                              Guy was pretty stupid for not removing the tie when asked. To me, it sort of suggests that he is a pain in the ass. What else is he refusing to do? Otherwise this would just be a one day "okay get out of here" kind of deal.

                                                                          Employers should be able to let employees go for any reason they want, at any time. Just as an employee should be able to leave for any reason they want, at any time.

                                                                          I was once fired from a developer position where I had no outside contact other than phone and email with clients for... having earrings... Sure I was pissed and was it justified? Absolutely not, especially considering I was putting in over 80 hours a week to get their only product on the market out the door (no exaggeration). While it sucked, I still support the right for business owners to make their own decisions.

                                                                                                                                                      Also, most companies in this day and age make you sign papers that basically say you can get fired for anything. They do not need to have a reason.
