groupon = the new tube

groupon sites will be the new tube sites.

groupon is clevcer as it offers huge discounts, but to get the discount you need to get others to join, such as 50 people. so it pushes you to post on facebook/twtter to your friends. so to get the discount you not only have to advertise the firm to get the sales.

its likly we will see many clones as we have with tube sites.

can it done with porn?

unlikly as i cannot see people boasting they look at porn.

I run the addithis tool on a lot of pages and get quite a few shares with clicks back from people adding it to their facebook page, twitter, etc.

Anyone can clone the script and groupon could care less about that.

It is much harder to get their traffic and the 3500 or whatever employees they have to make such a site successful.

The biggest thing they have to worry about is merchants deciding it isn't a good idea for generating business.

It is along the lines of saying Facebook will be replaced tomorrow or next week because it used to be MySpace and Friendster before that when that is an invalid argument and neither of them have anywhere near what Facebook does.

right, but it doesn't appear THAT impressive... they don't have that many local offers, good chunk of the traffic comes from PPC, their ads are all over the place, etc

their business plan is a bit flawed too I think, it depends on signing up new merchants all the time, so it's not very scalable, requires a huge sales team...

facebook in comparison just requires some servers and a some engineers to keep the infrastructure going, which is much easier and much more scalable...

There's already dozens of working groupon clones in existence, many of them are only in a couple cities. Getting a discount via groupon is not contingent at all upon getting others to join. It will be extremely difficult to ever clone Groupon and match its success as you'd need a lot of upfront capital and a sales force to establish the hundreds of merchant relationships needed to create the groupon offers. Groupon offers are generally 50% off, groupon takes half of the amount collected, so the merchant is essentially offering their services for 25%. Its not exactly easy to find merchants who are willing to move their product or services for 25 cents on the dollar.

1. You do not have to get others to join to get the discounts. You can buy a deal and then if you get others to buy the same deal you can get yours for free.

2. The real work on this type of website is getting the deals and getting the user base. That is not a small feat.

3. Facebook is not held together by just some servers and engineers. Facebook is what it is because of the external partnerships it has and those requires a lot of teams of a lot of people to manage and maintain.

4. I predict Groupon will continue to grow and prosper. LivingSocial is doing a good job of growing and moving into interesting directions (like LivingSocial Escapes), but Groupon continues to be more user friendly IMHO.

Groupon is not the "next tube". Tubes are going nowhere, while the Groupon idea will burn out very quickly.

Are you crazy? I know photographers who've been featured on Groupon and their business goes from OK to KABLAMO in 2 seconds flat. 2 days on Groupon will book the guy up for 6 months straight.

There's no doubt it's good for business. You'd be a fool not to accept their request to feature you. Similar to how you'd be nuts if you rejected Oprah for wanting to make your porn site one of her "Favorite Things".
