Bring a rain coat. I went to the Erotica Show and London has to be the dreariest places I've been. Street is wet weather it's raining or not. And don't get me started on the warm beer, drinks, soda and the fucking peoples teeth! haha

For real the soho district is fucking sweet. Check out these spots Bar Soho and the O Bar Pretty fucking cool places. Have a good time bro.

That might work, I don't think they will recognize a toothbrush so they may think it is a weapon

Try the Tower Thistle. It's where I stayed every month I went to London.

London sucks BTW.

The landmark better have broadband for what they charge. Nice area though.

O bar is lame ..full of wannabes hoping to run into a celeb. It is on the corner that leads to Compton Street, the gay area (which I love) so Labret can visit and write it off his taxes. Soho, is indeed excellent..loads of stuff to do depending on your tastes.

Yeah, it rains and can be a bit dreary but a bit of history will do that to a place.

Did you find the Erotica show helpful at all? I read they were opening a trade section but didn't get the chance to go.

I've been to London several times.
They're notorious for pamphlets that say "wonderful view of a courtyard", or "all the amenities you could require", and then you find yourself like in the movie "European Vacation" sharing a bathroom down the hall or the like.

You want broadband in your hotel room? Take one of the highest end hotels in the city, and call first and ask. It's the only way you'll get what you want.

hey, one tip.. since you are going fairly soon. When you find a hotel you like go to lastminute.com and look if they have any special offers going. I reguarly get the Novotel across the street from the Tower of London for half off.

Last minute also has good deals on shows, meals, etc.

Yes we were in the Trade section and sold quite a bit of our herbal products there. I'm actually glad we were in the trade area because downstairs was slammed, talk about a show! I had a good time at O Bar, didn't know that was a spot to look for celebs but we had a great time upstairs. I did like Bar Soho better, one of the bartenders told us it was the same owners

Thats fucking funny you said that. I meet this bartender who I was talking to all night, we were having fun busting on each other and the differences between our countries. She's like all americans are fat. It took me a minute but I realized there weren't a whole lotta fat people over there and the one's that were, were visting from the states But hey atleast we take care of our teeth!!

London is fantastic. Been there several times. Talk about shopping. You have to check out Kensington High Street, Soho of course and Covent Garden.

Everyone is well dressed in London so don't go out in shabby clothes unless you really want to stand out like a tourist. Buy a glass of Port at Covent Garden and listen to the students preform in the open for free. Take the subway wherever you go because it is the cheapest and fastest way. Check out the London walks where everyone meets at a specific subway station. For example there is the Jack the Ripper walk where you get to go to the places where he murdered all those women and then there is the pub walk where you hit every pub that has been open since like a 100 years ago. You drink as you move on so chances are you will be drunk by the time you get to the second pub. Check out the musicals. They are cheap in comparison to US$ and they are fantastic.

Have a great time!

Labret:

London is a fantastic town, very cosmopolitan, fucking expensive but fantastic all the same.

Where you're staying is on the northern edge of the centre. From there it's a short hop skip and a jump to places like the British Museum, British Library and Tottenham Court Road / Oxford Street for shopping.

Dunno what you're into but here's a few thing to see & do:

Buy and A-Z and an umbrella when you get there. See-through plastic pac-a-macs are very last year. Walk or go on the bus when you can, you'll get to see much more than on the Tube.

Art:

Go to the Body Parts Exhibition along Brick Lane which is just down from Spitalfields Market. Or check out the Tate Modern.

Food:
Avoid the over-priced shitty tourist trap restaurants around Covent Garden / Leicester Square like the plague. There's a lot of very good restaurants in London that won't quite break the bank.

Depending on what you like: Rasa on Church Street, Stoke Newington (Southern Indian), Moro's in Clerkenwell (Moroccan / Spanish), head to Hoxton for Vietnamese, Kensington area for Lebanese, Chinatown in between Wardour St & Soho has some good restaurants but be picky. A lot of pubs now have Thai restaurants tacked onto the side of them. The Churchill in Notting Hill is a good one.

History:

Ask your hotel about guided walking tours and take one. If you're into it, they're usually pretty interesting but can be cold and wet.

Drinking / Clubbing:

Theres' too many good places to list. You can get our versions of US beer over here, but our warm stuff actually tends to taste of something. Fuller's London Pride and Young's Special are two good beers. The bars can be cool on a Thurs / Fri / Sat night but the rest of the time you want to drink in a good honest pub.

One other thing.... if you're walking round Soho and some chap comes up to you touting a strip club... don't believe him - they all go to the same shithole.

"When a man is tired of London, a man is tired of life".

Enjoy your stay

good post Jermey.

One thing I would add - NEVER eat in the steakhouses..angus, or aberdeen..they are total ripoffs and only tourists go there.

I also disagree with umbrellas because the wind that comes with the rain often renders them useless.

Acutally..I put together http://london-travel-tips.com/ a couple years ago, just remembered.

I agree that the above statement is total bollocks. Wear what you want, noone will look twice at you.

Sarah is right about lastminute.com for when you get here. They often do great deals on good restaraunts and shows.

I'm probably in the best place I can be for when you land though - the hospital!!

J/K [Labret] I hope you enjoy your stay and believe me when I tell you that you'll find that 80% of the stuff you hear about England and London is totally untrue. The beer (lager) is cold, things aren't that much more expensive than the US (although the exchange rate is shit at the moment), and it doesn't rain all the time (just most of the time considering that it is Winter).

Have fun in London.

I have to agree with the previous post about them taking themselves a bit too seriously when it comes to dressing. They look good but they are a bit stuffy in the clubs. The best thing to do is find a couple of natives and head to the best pubs. You will really like their pubs which are full of the down to earth-very cool Brits.

If you still have time you should change your hotel reservation to Wyndham's 'Great Eastern' hotel. It's very very nice. They are one of the few hotels over there that have broadband in the room.

I'd reccomend a visit to the Trocadero (sp?) as well.

Wonder if they still have the cool "Aliens" reality ride in the basement. Scared the shit outta me when I went.

You could hit this overpriced arcade with the thousands of other tourists and kids that wander around London day to day but I've never seen the point. Its 5 levels of fruit machines, overpriced video games, with a few 'rides' thrown in for good measure. There is an internet cafe in there now I think but you are gonna have access in your hotel so there isn't any reason to hit the cafes.

I think the best idea I've heard so far is to catch up with Krome and let him show you the best of the town.

depends on what you mean by punk. The old 100 club, where the pistols got their jump start, is still there but is mostly jazz or rumba lessons.

If you are open to just crazy metal places, check out a pub called the Intrepid Fox. It is on Wardour street in Soho..small place but cool.

Check out Camden market..dingwalls is in that area too..good punk gigs usually.

Actually there is this mural by Blackfriars bridge and whenever I see it I think of Labret. It has these business men starting a revolution...it is actually really cool...ok I will get back on the meds now...
