Former Millburn resident Anne Hathaway has snagged the role of Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) in Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated "The Dark Knight Rises."
Selina Kyle/Catwoman is a whip-carrying burglar with a taste for high-stake thefts and is a sometimes-adversary of the Caped Crusader, often engaging in a love-hate relationship with him. In modern comic incarnations, Catwoman has been more of an antihero rather than a full-fledged supervillain.
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story," said director Christopher Nolan in a press release, posted at Deadline Hollywood.
In the sixties, actresses Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, and Eartha Kitt portrayed the feline role in the camp TV show "Batman." In 1992, Michelle Pfeiffer was cast for the film "Batman Returns" and in 2004 Halle Berry starred in a dreadful stand-alone Catwoman film.
DC COMICSIt was rumored that Keira Knightley, Rachel Weisz, Blake Lively and Natalie Portman were also vying for the coveted role.
In addition, Tom Hardy (who starred in Nolan's "Inception") will star as the villain Bane, a luchador-like baddie best known for breaking Batman's back in the "Knightfall" story arc.
Christian Bale will be reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman.
