Did Apple reverse its stance on nudity for Playboy?

So, Steve Jobs goes on medical leave and Apple begins allowing nudity into the App Store?

Hugh Hefner tweeted that full uncensored issues of Playboy magazine will become available on the iPad in March.

Engadget notes:

From its very first issue in 1953 to its latest incarnation, the full catalog of Playboy Magazine is coming to the iPad this March. And not only that, it?ll be faithful to its original form by arriving to your Apple slateuncensored.

I suspect that the timing of the Playboy for iPad launch has something to do with the new subscription billing API that Apple is developing for newspapers and magazine publishers. With it you?ll be able to ?subscribe? to a given publication from the iPad app and a pre-set amount will be automatically charged to your iTunes account at a daily/weekly or monthly interval. News Corp?s The Daily is believed to be the first app to use the new plumbing.

But forget about all that for a second, what?s up with the nudity? Is this an official change in policy by Apple? For now, no one?s talking?

The business can keep operating even if Steve Jobs goes on medical leave, if the business runs itself. There is a lot of controversy about which phones will have porn and which phones will not have porn. Different companies sure have different policies. Some policies may change in the future.

I don't know honestly... Apple's always had a pretty "Disney" approach. I wouldn't be surprised to see them hold their "moral high ground" long term. Then again I wouldn't be surprised to see the shareholders want to irk in on the extra profit either... anyone's guess until it happens.

Apple has a large presence in schools. They arent going to embrace porn and they dont have to. The first quarter they posted record revenue without adult apps.

What Hefner meant was its just a web site optimized for the ipad. It wont be going through the app store so it doesn't need Apple's approval.

I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Really apple just makes the device, if they lower the restrictions on the apps it's not as if apple is producing adult content. I can't see schools dropping their contracts with apple.

Dell probably has more contracts with schools and government institutions than anyone, and god knows how much porn has been viewed using Dells I know it's not quite apples to apples (no pun intended) but you get my drift.

I don't see anyone boycotting Andriod, the affiliated producers of droid phones, or Google over their allowance of adult apps on their platform

Also if I can add, in the smart phone / tablet war- even though apple was the innovator and people <3 Apple products- I believe it will be Boobies + Flash for the win. If they don't adapt to meet the demand they will lose their hold on the space they created.

It will never happen I guess all the conspiracy theories will be out in full force as Steve goes on leave but a lot of the comments above ring true! There are tones of adult “web apps” already live and you are promoting them :-) a nice publicity stunt to get people talking about Playboy!
