Noone knows where you live exactly, what your lifestyle is or if you have a family. Is it livable? of course, could you live on $5.00 a day? Of course if you are from a poor country. income tax rate is only 10% on that small of an income - couldn't live on that income in many cities in the US and Canada, not on your own. in some lower cost places u could get an apartment for 500 a month, leaves you about 750 for food, transportation, and everything else. living frugally you could do it.I moved my sites to Vacares Hosting. It's doable, but you'd live with no luxuries around here with that sort of income. With the US dollar below the Canadian right now, you'd actually probably have a hard time eating here on those earnings too. $100/day is enough to live a reasonably comfortable life around here for most people. $150-200/day and you shouldn't have any real worries at all.Last edited by Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life; 01-17-2011, 10:52 PM.Comment

You guys are underestimating just how freakin' expensive these 3rd world countries are.
Sure, if you want to live like a 'local' in a grass hut, you can live cheap in those countries. But if you want plumbing and similar western amenities, your costs will skyrocket. If you are looking at very poor countries you often can't live in a local neighborhood or else you will get robbed all the time - you need to live in the prime areas of town and they are expensive. You look at places like Kenya and all the white people live in expensive compounds that are guarded 24/7, and it's not because they like paying ridiculous money for that privilege.
On top of that, pretty much anything you want is not made in that country and imports are taxed to hell. So a 20K car in the US often costs 40K in those countries. Same with electronics, often 2x as much or more.
I've been to a good bunch of these countries in S America, Africa, and Asia and as a tourist they can be particularly expensive for tourists. (Esp Africa and S. America) Basically, the only travel you have there is cheap backpackers that don't mind not showering and sleeping in filth, and rich businessmen on an account that don't mind paying $300/night in Africa. And for average guy like me, it's hard to find anything reasonable.
