I think one of the reasons is that directors/photographers are not 'brands' anymore.

In the VHS/DVD era there was for sure a lot of crap - but there was also an incentive for the director to produce movies with personality.

One of the most despised and "commercial" directors of its time, Joe D'Amato, was STILL working with budgets, timeframes, scripts and actors that are a couple of orders of magnitude higher than the current average porn. Today he's a 'classic'.

I am certainly not praising good ol' times for the sake of it, but it is a fact that today's directors are mostly "anonymous" serial workers with no recognized name, little budgets, little incentive to go anyhow out of the box if they are just shooting 30 facial scenes for "granmafacials.com" - their name won't be in the credits anyways, 99% of the times.
